I’m not very good at video games

By Scott Wright

Sorry Cowboy fans. I offer my apologies for the poor display of video gaming that you read about in Wednesday’s paper. Jake Trotter and the Oklahoma Sooners gave me and the Pokes quite a beating in NCAA Football 2009. But don’t be discouraged. The 47-10 loss was more my inadequacy on the PS2 than the Cowboys lack of skill on the game. Still, I’m sorry I didn’t represent your team better.

There was a day, back in 2002, when I’d beat anybody wishing to challenge me in the NCAA Football series (except for my little brother, Kelly, who has always been like kryponite to me in video games). But I was 24 then. And those days are long gone. I’m sure some of you know the feeling.

But let me calm your sorrows with some real-life football news. OSU was voted No. 4 in the Big 12 South by the media in the conference preseason poll which was released today. The preseason all-conference team comes out Thursday, so look for that.

In case you’re curious, I didn’t vote in the poll. I’m not big on preseason polls of any kind. But here are the rankings:

Big 12 Preseason Football Poll (Media Vote)

South
1. Oklahoma (49) 304
2. Texas (2) 230
3. Texas Tech 227
4. Oklahoma State 140
5. Texas A&M 118
6. Baylor 52

North
1. Missouri (51) 306
2. Kansas 234
3. Nebraska 183
4. Colorado 181
5. Kansas State 108
6. Iowa State 59
(First-place votes in parentheses)

Scott,

Thank God the conference will allow the season to go ahead and be played.
There are times when the Cowboys come into a season with hightened expectations only to slip early. This is not one of them fortunately.

It seems the Cowboys are much better at sneaking up on opponents than coming into a game as the favorite.
It’s going to be a long time before OSU can finally get over the sportswriter’s bias (justifiably brought on by decades of inconsistent Cowboy football).

What’s really sad is that generally the sportswriters have a high percentage of correctly predicting the conference standings at the end of the year.

Gundy is going to have to pull some rabbits out of his hat…or somewhere for him to show enough improvement to keep his job (I fear). There’s just too much money and momentum going into OSU sports for mediocrity to continue.

It happened with Sean Sutton. That was AD Mike Holder’s call to all Cowboy coaches, especially Mike Gundy.

Don’t get me wrong — most Cowboy fans (including OSU’s largest fan, donor and national energy leader) really want Mike Gundy to succeed. BUT, big bosses don’t put up with losses.

OSU has the money, facilities and energy to attract (and hold this time) a big name coach. Mike Gundy knows that. Gundy knows a contract extension is just as good as a Final Notice.

Say what you will, sportswriters, but I predict OSU will have a much better defense this year and will NOT blow late leads like it has in the past.

OSU will be the Big 12 Cinderella story this year. We may not win the conference, but I predict a third, possibly a second place finish in the South.
