What’s on Your Nightstand?

What have you been reading these last dog days of summer? Like Kitty, I’m usually reading more than one book at a time.

Here’s what’s on my nightstand:

Supersense: Why We Believe in the Unbelievable by Bruce Hood (Beyond culture and the handing down of beliefs, Hood thinks there is something inherent in our nature that makes us believe the unbelievable.)

The Eyre Affair by Jasper Fforde (An adventure in an alternate world, where people really–I mean, *really*–value literature. What kind of drugs is this author taking?)

The Great Fables Crossover by Bill Willingham. (Latest installment of maybe the best comic/graphic novel series ever!)

(If you’ve been following this blog, you may be interested to know that Heinlein’s Stranger in a Strange Land is no longer on the nightstand!)

And what has been taking up Miss Kitty’s time?

No Going Back by Lyndon Stacey (An ex-cop and his retired police dog solve a crime.)

Women, Food and God: An Unexpected Path to Almost Everything by Geneen Roth (It’s about our relationship with food.)

The Physick Book of Deliverance Dane by Katherine Howe (A modern-day woman discovers she has a connection to the Salem Witch Trials.)

Plus, Kitty says she’s so fed up with this weather she’s getting ready to read a Christmas romance: Scrooge and the Single Girl by Oklahoma’s own Christine Rimmer.

OK, now it’s your turn. What have you been reading this hot, hot season?

Hmmm… with all these titles, I wonder how many categories I should tag? Let’s see…

OK, so I went onto my Facebook and Twitter pages and asked my social media friends what they have been reading. Here are the results:

Friend Vicki has finished two good books recently: “The Glass Rainbow” by James Lee Burke (she’s a big fan of the Dave Robicheaux books) and “Fire and Ice” by J.A. Jance.

Facebook friend Deon has just finished a book called “Metro Stop Paris” by Gregor Dallas. It’s about historic events that occurred along the metro line. He’s about to start the memoir, “Portrait of the Addict as a Young Man” by Bill Clegg.

My FB friend Cathy has just finished “The Defector” by Daniel Silva and is moving on to “Germania: In Wayward Pursuit of the Germans and Their History” by British writer Simon Winder.

Friend Cokie writes: “My favorite read so far was ‘The More I Owe You.’ ‘Let the Great World Spin’ was also excellent–it’s always nice to read a prize winner that so obviously deserves the acclaim. I’m almost finished with Lady Diana Cooper’s autobiography, and I picked up ‘The Meaning of Night’ at the library today. Can’t wait to start it.”

FB mate Karl just finished “The Reapers Are the Angels” by Alden Bell. He describes it as a lovely and terrible book. (Intriguing!)

My favorite response, though, is from FB pal Mary who has informed me that she is currently reading “Photoshop Element 8 for Dummies.” Sounds a little involved for summertime reading. Oh well. At least she has “61 Hours” by Lee Child waiting on her nightstand!

Facebook friend Lee is reading “The Giver” by Lois Lowry. I remember this was a *very* popular YA novel several years ago. My late friend Donna Norvell adored this book.
