What a mind starter for the day!

I think this real-life story speaks to the power of place and home in the mind of human beings. It is the comfort, the familiarity, the emotional and financial investment, and the connection to landscape and landmarks (and their power to evoke memories) that keep some Pitcherites from leaving, even as the town falls apart around them.

When you think about it, we see this all of the time with frail elderly people, who would rather stay in their familiar, possibly even unsafe, homes in lieu of a more convenient and healthy living environment. Yes, mortality is also an issue with the elderly, but isn't it also an issue with Pitcher? The town is slowly and painfully dying.

Kitty, your post makes me want to see The Trip to Bountiful again...

What a great blog essay, Kitty. It's left me wanting to read about Picher and its residents. So I will find the book and give it a read!
