What’s the deal with this?

Why should Barnes & Noble only sell books they publish in a specific category? It’s like libraries only buying books the librarians want to read. I get it they want to sell their “brand”. OK, sell it, put it in front of the other books, market it, etc. but don’t eliminate the competition.
Sometimes I fear they just don’t think we’re smart enough to know.

If we’re talking classics, I’m thinking we’re also talking about books that have entered the public domain — those that have no copyright considerations attached to them. That’s why B&N can do this. That’s why anyone with access to a printing press and resources can do it.
If I’m wrong, is there someone out there who can enlighten?
