Graphic Novels, Get Fables

My first couple of attempts at graphic novels didn’t take, they were very dark and violent and I just couldn’t get into them. But Sadie of Extremelygraphic blog suggested Fables, actually I started with 1001 Nights of Snowfall.  1001 Nights of Snowfall cover

The illustrations are just incredible, plus it gets you started with the whole Fables series. I just finished Fables: Legends in Exile or it could be titled “Who killed Rose Red?”. Legends in Exile, from Fables seriesHow can you not like fairy tale characters with all too human personae, The Big Bad Wolf as Bigby, hunky detective; Snow White, very tough second in command of Fabletown and Prince Charming, as less than charming man about town. Characters are introduced through a mystery surrounding the bloody disappearance of Rose Red.

If you haven’t picked up a graphic novel yet, go ahead and try these.  Read Sadie’s entry about the planned Fables television series.

I see you’ve caught the Fables bug! I had read the first collection (or what I thought was the first collection), Legends in Exile, and after Sadie’s blog I picked up the second collection, Animal Farm. It deals with the Fables who are can’t pass for human, and so are kept at a farm in upstate New York, away from prying eyes. There’s an attempted coup against the city Fables, and you won’t believe Willingham’s take on Goldie Locks!

So, do I need to go back and read 1001 Nights of Snowfall before I continue the series. Kitty, help!

Yes, absolutely go back and read 1001 Nights of Snowfall, it gives insight into the characters, and there are a host of different illustrators. Thinking about it makes me want to go read it again, now that I’m into the series.
