Eric Wenger is, I think, a skilled public servant. However, observers rarely get a glimpse into his personality ... has anyone ever seen Wenger laugh in public, or hardly ever smile?

So ... what makes him tick? I don't think that anyone really knows for sure. I surely don't.

I remember somewhere along the journey of creating the Film District, the I-40 move was discussed as it would impact our area. At one of the design charettes, we were told that Walker would be a new gateway into the area as the boulevard would become ground level at that location. We even created some sketches and ideas for the gateway/arch concept into the new district.

In my humble opinion, I think the Boulevard should drop below grade from about Compress, under the BNSF tracks, all the way west to Walker. In doing so, it would serve the underground parking that will likely be built to serve the new convention center and the below-grade levels of the Myriad Gardens. It also would provide an extension of the Central Park up to the south edge of the convention center, eliminating the concerns about pedestrians crossing the Boulevard. This is roughly a four-block stretch; it does no harm to the idea of redeveloping retail directly in front of the Boulevard west of Walker and east of Compress. It eliminates "several new intersections at Walker, Hudson, Harvey, Robinson, Broadway, Gaylord, and Oklahoma" as Mr. Wenger worded it. If we're moving toward a more pedestrian-friendly downtown, let's get serious about it.
