Furthermore, the most amusing part of the denial of responsibility.. I have text messages from one owner, when asked the reason for slashing the security pay, number of security, etc.. responded with how he is who everyone in Bricktown wants to be like. He said he leaves all other business owners in his shadows. He goes on to state how he has had to sell one of his many luxury cars, and even had to get rid of his motorcycle... sad day when someone has to suffer like that huh? The messages continue as it's stated that when the bills need to be paid someone is taking a cut and I quote.. "It will not be me." So at a time shortly after a tragic incident happened in OKC as a police officer is paralyzed from intervening for the lack of adequate security in an establishment... several violent attacks committed by people leaving ROK bar (which we had them admit to committing when pressured)... the solution to having to sell one of many luxury cars... is to cut security. I quit as a result of this insult, and two weeks later this tragic attack occurred outside. You do the math. I could go on for hours on this topic, however the bottom line relating to this specific topic is, violent offenders, known criminals, and riff raffs in general are given a place to hang out, assault others, all in the name of greed over the little money they bring to the establishments. As for the comment about police offices, I've never had one fail to assist me in over 18 years in Bricktown. What people need to understand is these people committing these assaults are regulars to this. They know how to follow people, where to wait, and what to look for. If they see an opening, they just simply pounce on whomever they feel deserves it. To prevent it, officers would literally have to follow them around all night. If the bar would recognize the damage that is being caused to Bricktown in general, as well as their reputation, the would simply not allow these types of individuals and groups admittance.

Steve, I am the former security guard who was interviewed. I have not only worked at this establishment, but for the former bar owned by the same people. I'd been with them over 7 years and truth is, I will stand by my statements. To those asking why this establishment should be focused on rather than the adjacent business I can say, those businesses do not tolerate repeat violent offenders, people who are known to steal from patrons in their establishment (yes we have caught some red handed and they are allowed to return).. The bar had a chance to ban several individuals, keep the trouble makers out, etc. Rather, the insisted they be let in, consistently cut security staff, cut wages, etc. All in the name of saving a few dollars. Literally at times as little as $20-50. To anyone interested I have stored in my phone dozens and dozens of past text messages from managers and owners refusing to ban trouble individuals, making comments about how much money they bring to the bar, etc. I have dozens asking to cut security, make sure the door count is always close to the capacity even though it was at times over 100 people over. The other establishments may contribute to the number of people filing out into the canal at closing time, but they do not seem to harbor, welcome, and turn a blind eye to people they know are trouble makers.. all in the name of making an extra tip.

Tom, it's interesting you note the situation at Dan O'Brien's... it also has been the subject of publicly expressed concerns about its operations, safety measures... here is a story done after the brutal beating of officer Peery:
OKC bar faces inquiry into hidden ownership
By John Estus
Capitol Bureau
Saturday, February 26, 2011
Edition: CITY, Section: NEWS, Page 1A
The bar where an Oklahoma City police officer was beaten last week has been under investigation by state alcohol agents who suspect it may be illegally owned in part by two felons convicted in a federal mortgage fraud case.

Since last fall, Oklahoma Alcoholic Beverage Laws Enforcement Commission agents have been investigating whether there is hidden ownership at Dan O'Brien's Public House, 2747 W Memorial Road, agency general counsel John Maisch said Friday.

ABLE agents suspect felons Rusty and Joe Therrien, who are brothers, may be hiding their ownership interest in the bar with the help of their father, Conrad Therrien.

Conrad Therrien, 59, is a co-owner of the bar and part of another ownership group trying to buy the bar outright, Maisch said.

Rusty Therrien, 37, and Joe Therrien, 34, were convicted in 2007 of wire fraud and other financial crimes in a far-reaching federal mortgage fraud case related to home sales in Edmond's upscale Oak Tree neighborhood.

Felons are not allowed to have alcohol licenses in Oklahoma and therefore cannot own bars.

In addition, all bar owners must be disclosed on alcohol permit applications to the ABLE Commission.

The brothers are not listed as owners in any paperwork on file with the agency.

Several efforts to reach the Therriens and bar owners were unsuccessful Friday.

On Friday evening, ABLE agents issued a liquor license revocation notice against Rusty Therrien, who works at the bar, and a citation against the bar for allowing a fight.

The citation stems from the Feb. 15 beating of officer Chad Peery, 34, who was left paralyzed after being beaten while trying to break up a fight at the bar.

The citation alleges the bar did not do enough to prevent the fight.

State law prohibits bars from condoning fighting.

Peery, who was off duty, was asked by bar employees to help remove three men from the bar who were causing a disturbance. Maisch said the bar should have had someone on duty capable of removing the men from the bar.

"We can't stop 100 percent of the fights," Maisch said. "However, businesses that sell alcoholic beverages do have a responsibility to take reasonable steps to reduce the likelihood that fights will occur.

These steps can include increasing staffing levels during peak service periods and requiring server training to assist bartenders in learning to identify and discontinue serving customers who exhibit aggressive behavior."

Dan O'Brien's hosted a fundraiser for Peery on Feb. 19. Several city police officers attended.

'It raised a flag'

Rusty Therrien drew scrutiny from investigators in October, when he was caught working in the bar without an alcohol server's license.

At that time, a bar employee told an ABLE agent the Therrien brothers had been working at the bar and that their father owned part of the bar, records show.

"It raised a flag to us," Maisch said.

On his subsequent application for a server's license, Therrien falsely reported he had not been convicted of a felony.

ABLE then inadvertently issued him a server's license despite state law preventing felons from obtaining alcohol server licenses.

Investigators have since been looking into whether Conrad Therrien is paying his sons earnings from his ownership stake in the bar as part of a hidden ownership agreement.

"We have reason to believe that Joe (Therrien), although he hasn't obtained a license, that he is also involved in the business," Maisch said.

Maisch said the hidden ownership could possibly stretch back years.

Maisch said his agency has been holding up the bar's request to transfer its alcohol license to the other ownership group Conrad Therrien is part of until the investigation into possible hidden ownership is complete.

An ABLE Commission hearing on the matter is set for March 15.

My question is how can the police and the City keep insisting that Bricktown is "family friendly" when you have these bars (no one under 21) and where teenagers aren't allowed after "curfew" without an adult or proof that they just got out of the movie or Thunder game? I am not saying that Bricktown is any more dangerous than other areas where bars exist. Also not saying that everyone who goes to a bar is going to cause trouble but whenever you combine alcohol and people, things happen. If they want Bricktown to be safer and "family friendly" they need to ban all "adult only" businesses and esp bars from the area.

I'm not well-versed in the facts of either case, and I haven't ever been to either bar, but isn't this comparable to the fight involving off-duty OCPD officer Chad Peery at O'Brien's?

Both involved people who were drinking inside, altercations arose, and the parties stepped outside to resolve them. Both fights took place mere steps from the entrances. O'Brien's larger, suburban location meant that the fight took place on its property. Rok Bar's urban location meant that the fight took place on public property.
