Renewed Energy

Jay Marks, Adam Wilmoth and Paul Monies

Change, it seems, is unending. Sometimes it’s good, sometimes its bad, sometimes it’s just … different. Right now, it’s good. There’s a renewed spirit in the newsroom. There’s a new emphasis on quality, in-depth journalism, and I’m hearing from many of you that you’re noticing the difference. Over on the business desk, we’ve been blessed to have two of our best former writers and reporters – Adam Wilmoth and Paul Monies – returning to the fold to take on the challenge of making The Oklahoman one of the country’s top sources for energy news. hey join Jay Marks, who has been doing a great job tackling the industry on his own the past couple of years. I’m really hoping those of you who quit subscribing to The Oklahoman come back as well – I have every reason to believe and hope that the improved coverage you’re seeing will only get better in the months to come.

Not to be a downer, but The Lost Ogle has been doing a better job covering the local energy economy than the black tower has.

I don’t fault you for working for the paper because what you cover isn’t a particularly partisan area, but the Oklahoman is a joke regarding ‘in-depth’ coverage on energy.

Judge us by what’s to come, not what is in the past.

I’m not sure that they look very happy to be back.

Better is a relative term. It does not necessary mean the LO is good. I am not defending the past but facts are facts as the LO covers a lot of ground and not necessary in any great educated/knowledgeable depth.

I am very glad that the current ownership of the paper does not appear to have any sacred cows that cannot be gored. Let the blood letting begin.

A smile can go along way…just ask my councilman Mr. Shadid….LOL

Hey Steve, when do you get to pose for a cool boy-band picture?!?!

Looks like these guys are posing for their new album, “Straight outa Mesta!”

Don’t judge us by the past? What a joke. You hire two ‘new’ people who have already been at opubco and know the ground rules for what’s untouchable and what’s not. You think they are going to break any new ground with stories about, say, Chesapeake? Will the Oklahoman ever acknowledge the recent stories by Forbes and Rolling Stone. If chk ever hits a big financial bump that will reveal some major journalistic malpractice by opubco. In this area, one readers opinion has long outweighed what the rest of the community should know.

Derp, if you actually read The Oklahoman’s Power Play blog, you’d know the answer….

Wow, that’s some in depth reporting there Steve. Basically a blog that’s parrots what chk says instead of asking them the tough question the article raises. This team is off to a fine start as stenographers.
Also no mention of Adam wilmoth’s previous employ? Hmmmm

They started last week. Sounds like you’re going to think what you think. Have fun with that.

I’m going to take a wait and see approach, but I quit giving the paper the benefit of the doubt years ago. They no longer get any of my money, and that won’t be changing without an improvement to their investigative reporting and a change in the way they slant their placing and writing of headlines and stories.

With the recent change of ownership, I’m not optimistic about the paper’s quality improving any time soon. It really is terrible currently.

i’ve subscribed for years, but i can’t help notice that the paper has not only gotten smaller, it’s gotten thinner, too. i think craigslist has just about completely killed the classifieds.

david: All valid points (except for the car ads…there are still plenty of those)

That said, I have noticed a marked change in tone on the Editorial page. Similar viewpoint but more rational and less rabid

Come on guys, I see no reason to pile onto Steve here, whom does NOT cover energy for the Dark Tower. This is his employer for almost two decades I think. If you guys worked there, and had for two decades, and had a family relying on you, you all would probably happily fight for some good grace as well.

I’m surprised this post even got any comments. But I do think that Oklahoman editors should be more critical and give their journalists more leeway to actually do journalism, especially now that ownership is Denver-based and not itself engaged in local power schemes.

Glad to see Mr. Monies back in the state! I hope nothing bad happened at his DC job. Hope he just wanted to come “home.”

It just seems like Steve defends answers and misinformation from opubco that he would never tolerate from the people he covers.

You’re right Derp, and let’s just say we’re glad he’s covering downtown and not the energy beat, PR duties, whatever you call it.

Derp, I believe we’re going to prove you wrong… I said judge us by what’s about to come, not from the past… what’s past is past.
