If You Give Folks a Basketball Court, They’re Going to Want a Tournament….

A lot of folks are cheering news that Downtown Oklahoma City Inc. is preparing to install a basketball court south of the Myriad Gardens. Over at OKC Talk, Pete Brzycki, the site’s host, recalls how three-on-three tournaments were once played with temporary goals in and around Kerr Park.

“Whatever happened to this?” Pete asks. “I remember it was very popular. Really easy way to bring people downtown.”

I remember going to this when I was a kid. It was really fun, and I remember it being really busy. I hope to see it happen again!

gee, i don’t know which is better. the gene simmons-type shoes, or those amazing shorts. do you think they’ll bring those back, too?

I wonder if it’s too late to embed some sleeves for basketball goals in the pavement as a part of Project 180. Lots of universities do this in parking lots so they can host summer camps. Or at the very least for future downtown road projects like EK Gaylord.

They are just starting a Better Block initiative in OKC and one of the more successful things they’ve implemented elsewhere is periodically retaking streets for recreation (among other things). The city parks & rec department could store the goals and put them out on a rotating basis to encourage people to get out of their cars and play some hoops. And couldn’t the same be done with street hockey goals and other sports? Just chalk the court lines and wash them off later.

I remember playing in the 3-on-3 tournaments when I was 10. I’m pretty sure Oklahoma City’s own Blake Griffin, Taylor Griffin, and J.R. Giddens also played there in their youth.

Do you/they want donated basketball things?

I’m not trying to brag but I was always good at H O R S E.

Are there any plans to have any rugby fields?
