Meanwhile, On the East Edge of Heritage Hills

While Heritage Hills residents have been focused on the pros and cons of The Edge, an apartment complex planned for NW 13 and Walker, another development at NW 15 and Broadway appears to have escaped their notice.
This old car dealership building is up at Planning Commission this Thursday for an ABC (liquor) zoning. From the plans below, it looks like the restaurant/bar, “Exhale,” will be a pretty ambitious remodel:

UPDATE: Yes, this “venue” will have a mezzanine. Not sure what this is going to be … Heritage Hills, ARE YOU PAYING ATTENTION TO THIS YET?

ANOTHER UPDATE:

Finally got to watch the presentation on the successful request for a variance on parking for this development at Thursday’s Board of Adjustment. Questions were asked about what kind of restaurant this would be – and the representative, restaurant and bar consultant David Ledbetter, responded it will be like “Babe’s,” a chicken chain in Dallas, during the daytime, and if I understood his answer right, Saltgrass Steakhouse, another Texas chain, at night.

That sounds like a pretty cool deal, if that’s all it is. But those I’m speaking to say this doesn’t add up. The stages, multiple bars, mezzanine, and even the kitchen size don’t seem to fit with these answers. I’ll be sure to keep everyone updated when I get some answers to all this.

FINAL UPDATE: We still don’t know what “Exhale” will be, but I just got off the phone with Dave Ledbetter, a well-respected restaurant consultant who is attached to this project, and his response to questions posted on this item, specifically whether it will be a strip club or hip-hop club, was “heavens no – it will not be a strip club or a hip-hop club.”

I hope to get more information for you on this project later this week.

Is this a local project or a chain?

I don’t know. All I know is what I could find in the packet from the Planning Commission.

I wonder what clientele they will be attracting? I can easily see this drawing the NE 36th/Kelly “Lexus Club” crowd which will set the HH/MP residents on fire. The listed name “Exhale” tells me this could be a problem in the making.

Uhhh…”performance area?” And that big blank space below it with a 12″ step-up? Sure looks like a dance floor. Two bar areas, one of them really large? The name? This place has “nightclub” written all over it. It even has “topless nightclub” potential..

Lol! Exhale! Hopefully HH residents like fighting dudes in Ed Hardy gear.

I look forward to “making it rain” when this fine establishment opens!

I don’t see a second stage Chad, so it probably isn’t a topless night club. However, this has a much greater potential of lowering property values than NW 13ths development.

There seems to be a lot of knowledge about the interior layout of top;ess facilities. LOL

I am not sure how to take what is being said here… If I didn’t know better I would think that it is being implied that once Blacks begin patronage of an establishment the result is a decrease in property values. I really hate that my hometown and birthplace is like this… We already are judged unfairly in Bricktown, now I read what MikeN and Wylie H. ignorantly spew. There are a lot of educated Blacks in OKC that are looking to spend their hard earned dollars (earned from working everyday) in an establishment where we are not viewed as a stereotype, but by the content of our character… I think we should take a look at the Thunder motto and learn to Rise Together!

i have wondered for some time about the strip of broadway north of automobile alley. the railroad/ interstate forms a definite barrier between the east and west sides, and positive re-development has surrounded this strip of broadway for several years now. i have been frankly puzzled as to why the positive vibe hasn’t traveled all the way to twenty third street, particularly in view of what has been shown to be possible on ninth street. frankly, i think retail is probably a better use since there are already entertainment venues nearby, but what do i know.

Sometimes positive vibes are like that. You never know what
they’re going to do. Maybe it’s travelling up sixteenth street and taking its time getting to twenty third street.

I like the part about being
one restaurant in the afternoon and another one at night.

That sign “It’s Fatal to Fumble When Pullin Your Gun” is
very old west/wild west.

And then, listening to this…what more could you ask for?

That’s a good question, David. I tend to think we’ll see more growth in that area as Automobile Alley reaches capacity. Of course, it will require more new construction north of 13th instead of remodeling existing structures like we’ve see thus far. Feel free to correct me if my recollections are wrong.

Well that’s weird. I posted a link to Babe’s
Hokey Pokey page but it didn’t post.

Testing

People rest assure I know who is doing this project. IT IS NOT I REPEAT NOT going to be a strip club the stage was put in there for country and western artist. NOT STRIPPERS they are going for your high end type crowd with a brand new fresh look on outside. THEY ARE GOING FOR THE SALT GRASS STEAKHOUSE atmosphere with drinking and mixed drinks while you eat with big T.V screens to watch shows while eating!

I understand it is going to ba a “Toby Kieth” type venue with moore of a steak house menu. Actually bringing in a nice restraunt (with parking!!)and live entertainment should be a nice draw to the area and actually improve property values. This would help to encourage development along 13th and Broadway and help to eliminate bare lots.

I agree with Marcus. The fear of a potential “hip hop” club reveals a subtle racism that goes completely unquestioned. Heaven forbid minorities come near OKC’s newly gentrified areas. This exact same racism was on display over at OKCTalk.com by the same people.

Cimarron deux? How do you explain the rows of stools hugging the performance area… A meat bar?

They should get some pointers from Doc Severinsen. (His version was a huge success.)

Grolgar, right or wrong, hip-hop is associated by some people as being a form of entertainment that glorifies the gang lifestyle and that’s what drives some folks’ fears (that and the publicity surrounding crime at some hip-hop clubs like the one at NE 36 and Kelley). Is racism a factor here? Was it a factor on The Edge? I’ll leave that whole discussion to others …

Steve thanks for pointing out the obvious to the uneducated about the UNDENIEABLE connection with violence that occurred almost nightly at the Lexus. It is NOT racism but HARD COLD FACT!!! For the ignorant the police reports are readily avaiable for public inspection.

Once the authorities got the Lexus closed for good that area saw its criminal element decrease sustantially, another UNDENIABLE FACT. Marcus and Golgar please check your facts BEFORE posting. Thank You.

I don’t have to check my facts I live on the Eastside MikeN! It is no longer called Lexus and it has been a problem due to the younger blacks, but there are many adult blacks that are discriminated in Bricktown. I suppose the recent news coverage on that topic must’ve been erroneous?

Point blank I am not (nor have I ever been) ignorant to the racism that is spewed on websites by faceless individuals. Hip-Hop is not the cause of the violence that you and Steve seem so ready to talk about as a viable reason to exclude Blacks in general from anywhere outside of 36th and Kelly. I am not aware of any studies that link Hip hop to violence. There is an undeniable (and iron clad) link between income and crime, and I am willing to state that has more to do with it than the music.

The younger crowd (under 25) was not who I was referring to in my initial post. Additionally I was referring to the subtle racist remarks that were made prior to my post. There is not violence at Lexus daily, not even weekly. I and my friends have been there several times in the past weeks and did not witness any violence. But I acknowledge that there have been incidents.

I really hate that you jump to the conclusion that I am uneducated and ignorant because I voiced an opinion that is different than how you may believe. You never once asked for my credentials… I am highly educated (I am currently 3 hours from my MPA from OU), and I was speaking for the educated blacks that are here in OKC, and yes WE DO EXIST! That is like me assuming that you and Steve have never been to that side of town for anything other than Leo’s. That is wrong MikeN… Dead wrong!

You know better… Now do better!

As a property owner in HH, I welcome all positive economic development. Bring on any kind if music, eating, or entertainment establishment. Developers should be aware that there is a daycare, Church, and hospital within a few feet of the proposed Exhale. Also don’t do this without parking!!

Marcus there has been no violence at Lexus in years due to it BEING CLOSED or are you IGNORANT of that FACT??? Obviously you are not a knowledgeable resident of the area or you would have knowledge of this. As to the acts in Bricktown when you are dressed as a hip hop gansta DO NOT COMPLAIN when you are treated like one.

I agree that the lack of income is a direct link to crime. Poor ghetto areas are crime infested that is a FACT regardless of color of the residents. Also there is a direct coorelation between hip/hop gangsta rap and crime. Recall Biggy Smalls and Tu Pac???

I get so tired of any comments that reflect truthfully on the eastside as RACIST. Calling that out is the hobgobblin of stupidity/little minds.

MPA are you referring to MBA? If you are then your stupidity and lack of proper English skills are SELF evident. As a comparison I have a Bachelors Degree in both Chemical and Electrical Enginerring so do you want to compare degrees programs???

Rampant crime on the eastside on OKC is readily factual. Just cart your butt to the police department and check the reports. Drive by shotings are not the scourge of upper class neighborhoods.

Guys, I’m going to close this comment thread. This post was not about whether concerns about live hip-hop venues amount to racism – it’s about plans for this property.
