Backing In?

Two years ago I posted this image of Broadway from the 1920s as a response to urban planner Jeff Speck, who was curious as to whether Oklahoma City had attempted reverse angled parking in the past. The answer: yes.

Coffee Slingers is doing a great job bringing attention to the question of reverse angled parking via the coffee shop’s social media accounts. These folks have reason to be interested in the topic – a similar proposal has been debated back and forth for Automobile Alley.
First, a video Coffee Slingers posted showing an educational video on reverse angled parking from Austin, Texas:

And now, for the backlash:

The question posed by Coffee Slingers – a good one I think – is what do you think?

Bikers back in to park all of the time. And take a third of the space of an automobile.

Reverse angle parking is easy, logical, safe, and functional… Why is there even a question? Paradigm problem?

I’m in favor of the “back in” parking. Conventional angled parking on Auto Alley will be dangerous. Everytime I park in downtown Norman to go into Forward Foods or Guestroom, leaving feels like I’m risking my life.

Why the Planning Dept isn’t going “all the way” and advocating a truely ingenious urban solution such as this is beyond me. Particulaly as we install real urban design in Project 180. I believe the consultant for P180, Jeff Speck, even recommends “back in” parking in his book. The people involved should make note of this.

Kudos to Slingers for advocating.

You know, if there is opposition to this because it is a new concept, then why don’t they do a test area and see if people like it? It’s just paint and a few signs.

Back in angle parking is a time tested and beneficial idea whose time has returned.

I came out in favor of this back in November.

This is a great idea so I don’t know what is taking so long. Some people would vote against tomorrow if there was a slight chance it would be different than today.
