When History and Facts are Inconvenient to a “Controversy”

Sonic was front and center in support for the 1993 MAPS ballot, as shown in this photo taken prior to the vote.

Looks like Sonic Drive Ins, based in Bricktown, is going to get beaten up no matter what for a choice by independent franchises in Memphis to back the Grizzlies in Saturday’s game against the Oklahoma City Thunder.

Consider, for just a moment, that Sonic took a fairly brave stance in 1993 by publicly backing the original MAPS ballot when community support for the effort was very divided. That ballot included the Oklahoma City Arena, without which most agree the city never would have attracted an NBA team.

People don’t always bother to find out the facts. While I won’t like seeing Sonic on the back of the t-shirts in Memphis, it’s ridiculous to blame the Sonic Corp. for the actions of franchise holders.

All this could have been avoided if the team had kept the Sonics name and adopted that giant order of fries for its mascot.

No controversy here folks, move along…

Seriously, I’m happy to see the Sonics corporation supporting the communities they operate in. Bravo.

Agreed. This is nothing more than some ignorant/small minded fools with nothing better to do than complain.

It doesn’t take much to char some folks’ tater tots.

Is Sonic is going to get beaten up for anything, it should be its terrible service and crappy food.

Hey Steve,

I saw you and a Channel 9 truck leaving the north side of the current Devon hq yesterday around 5:00. Anything interesting going on? I wasn’t able to watch the news last night.

Come on guys, how neat that the franchise owners in Memphis get to have good time with the Sonic Headquarters officials here locally, what office fun! Would love to be apart the the office atmosphere. GO THUNDER!

Unrelated Brian.

Hay, does anyone know someone at FedEx that could sponsor some cool blue Thunder t-shirts? I’d wear one of those.

Bates for the win.
