A Social Media War: Right or Wrong?

I hoped to be the first to discuss a bit of a battle that emerged last week via Twitter and Facebook between an OKC public relations pro and downtown favorite Big Truck Tacos. But when you’re busy annoying the mayor, SandRidge Energy, Bob Funk and potentially another major company in town (and countless others), sometimes there’s not enough time in the day.
And so it is that Dave Rhea, the social media guy at the Journal Record, beat me to the punch. The discussion can be found here

More than one bone-headed move in that story.

Big Truck Taco’s downtown? That’s news, but anyhow I agree with the part that their PR strategy has gone downhill. This isn’t the first time they try to “bash” a complaining customer over Twitter. I’ve seen them do it at least 3 times now about complaining customers. Seems juvenile to me, but from the times I’ve seen the owners, they seem to act that way to. Good thing the food makes up for the juvenile attitudes that often go on here.

I never said Big Truck is downtown. I said it’s a downtown favorite – as in, it’s a favorite among downtowners.

Oh, thanks for clarifying. I took it as downtown/downtowners. I’d say it’s a favorite of all inner city folks, not just the downtown crowd, but nonetheless, it’s not the first time BTT has called out one of their complaining customers on Twitter, and no none of them have been me.

Steven, you just gave me a very, very good laugh. Thank you – it’s good to keep our sense of humor in these matters. As an aside, I’m jealous of the discussion Dave has going on over there at JR land.

BTT, overpriced and overhyped, but good for the masses. Glad they are successful and helping 23rd Street. I am not surprised people who like BTT also follow Twitter. Be adventurous and do the good taquerias South of I-40. And they cost less.

This entire thing strikes me as kind of juvenile. Two basic food service lessons could have made this a non issue: don’t let rude people get to you, and don’t make a bad situation worse. Every kitchen makes some mistakes every single day, be it Taco Bell or the Ritz Carlton. It happens. That’s the nature of the beast. The best you can do is smile, listen, apologize, take care of the issue, and move on with your life. It’s petty to post on twitter about your bad restaurant experience, but it’s monumentally petty to engage in a flame war with everyone who has ever had a bad experience at your restaurant. BTT does enough business and is generally of a good enough quality that they can afford to turn off the occasional annoying customer…for now. So long as they don’t make a habit of it, they’ll be just fine.

On the bright side. It’s better than a real war, though. That’s me, Mr. Brightside. :)

Wow! First Steven, have you ever met the owners? You simply sound bitter or worse. I would like to begin by saying that this ridiculous situation still serves to show how a great restaurant still has jealous and hateful publicity surrounding it. The problem is that most people who comment on this haven’t followed it completely. Dave Rhea has used this situation to further his blog that has historically NOT been “exciting” enough to even respond to. Shame on him for using unexceptable behavior that he blasted BIg Truck for. Double standard? Of course it is. Where is it written that it’s ok for some people in the community to have a voice and use it because of their “occupation” and for others it is not?!!! Why should a person/business have to remain silent when they are blasted? I am saddened by the whole media surrounding this whole thing. I have an idea…media/PR people/news writers…..how about accepting the same standard you are expecting of others. If you did you would have very little to teach regarding social media or to print in your boring blogs.

For what it’s worth, I’m an unabashed fan of the twins and their tacos, bones and all. The twins are who they are and who their fans know them to be. I doubt this will hurt them.
