Downtown Gathering Spot
I’m toying with an idea I’m not quite ready to go public with – but – I need help in determining its feasibility.
Yeah, I’m making an odd request.
Is there one spot downtown, more than any other, that one could call the community’s gathering spot? I’m thinking along the lines of a coffee shop, restaurant, or heck, maybe even a hotel or office tower lobby. In Edmond, such a spot would be easy to identify – the Around the Corner restaurant.
Let the discussion begin.

I’d have to agree with Nick with regards to such a place not existing.
But, if I had to vote, I’d say Coffee Slingers if you’re in the arts crowd or Leadership Square if you’re a 9-5 downtowner.
The only place I see people gathering, just to gather…is Centennial Fountain (mostly on weekends, though). I’m not sure a hipster coffee shop would make the cut in my book. When I think “gathering spot”, my mind goes to town squares, piazzas, public spaces that are activated with people and energy.
Currently no, but when the Myriad Gardens is done I imagine it becoming one. Otherwise I think Kris is right with the Centennial Fountain. NE 9th street is also pretty buzzing at night. It was slammed last night, a Tuesday still at 10pm. Bricktown was also pretty busy with no large events going on, well past 10pm.
It really depends what the idea you’re tinkering with is, Steve. Does it need to be indoors or would outdoors work just as well?
What Nick said, we currently have no Central Park so to speak so without more details, it’s all personal opinion and preference at this point.
Steve are you thinking of inviting all of your readers over to your house as a place to gather? If so, I think that is a great idea.
The closest we’ve got is the Centennial Fountain, but I don’t think even that fits the bill entirely.
I’m sure Sandridge has some room for an inside gathering? Especially if it’s Steve and friends, j/k.
There is usually a large group gathering outside of the civic center plaza, although that is an outside location.
There is some empty space in the former downtown home of the Legislature … for now anyway.
what?? too soon?
If you’re thinking along the lines of a coffee shop, restaurant, or heck, maybe even a hotel or office tower lobby, which is exactly what you said you’re thinking, then there is no doubt the lobby/atrium of Leadership Square is the place. It has the name – Leadership – and it is where you’ll see more people you might know than any other place in downtown. And it is easy to “gather” there.
Leadership works, but if there are too many people, nobody will be able to hear. The acoustics there are terrible.
It’s hard to know what exactly you’re looking for. I’m from Edmond and I’ve never set foot in Around the Corner…
I’m also thinking along the lines of a coffee shop, restaurant, or heck, maybe even a hotel or office tower lobby. Thanks a lot.

The library rotunda?
City Hall ground level?
First National concourse?
Skirvin lobby?
There isn’t really such a place that exists. Too bad The Buzz is gone.
