Positive for Bricktown?

That’s the question when it comes to a certain bar along the Bricktown Canal that in the past has been known to hang up posters in windows – visible to families and kids – of scantily dressed porn stars.
A report by Capt. Steve McCool today adds to this particular nightclub’s reputation the following:
- Allowing an underage Thunder player into the premises;
- Exceeding legal occupancy by 50 percent after being warned not to do so at a meeting just days earlier.
Care to guess the identity of this stellar Bricktown venue?

Rok Bar. It’s disgusting.

I thought maybe you were referring to Coyote Ugly.

Should everything in Bricktown be catered to families? As a family-man myself, this is my preference. However, an “entertainment district” will naturally include some risque elements, don’t you think?

Get over the posters, it’s fair game..art even. Enforce capacity standards. And someone needs to ask Capt Steve McCool if KD has earned his right to party in Bricktown.

The Thunder player was James Harden, by the way.

It wasn’t KD.

Lots of bars in Bricktown and most of them seem to provide a place for adults to enjoy themselves without being so sleazy. Yeah, even Coyote Ugly.

This place belongs over on Meridian. Ugh.

Kris, here’s the thing: the bar is located on the Bricktown Canal, which was paid for by families throughout the city. Is the canal the best place in Bricktown for adult venues?
An aside from that, there are clubs and bars elsewhere along the canal where you don’t hear about these problems. Just this one. And ironically, the same operators had a club along E Sheridan a couple years ago where police reported having numerous gang problems….
Go figure…
I hear far more complaints about this one club than any other in Bricktown. I’m waiting for just a few more things to pop up before I name names and get into the nitty gritty….

In all do respect wasn’t the canal paid by other demographics as well. I would also argue that the a good portion of the bar and club generation that goes to this bar, the same generation downtown is looking to attract, paid little if nothing to the creation of the canal.
Standards need to be set and abided by, no question there. Also understood is the need for a family friendly atmosphere. However, if you want to attract and keep young adults here a good entertainment district, which does lag here comparatively to other peer cities, goes a long way. Even though I don’t necessarily agree with all of the methods this particular bar uses, I would have to argue that one of the reasons this bar is popular in this city IS because it isn’t a family friendly place.

Wow, are we the moral police now?

The laws should be enforced, no question about that, otherwise I have no problem with the type of business it is. When in bricktown I prefer a quieter place to drink where I can actually find a seat, but having a variety of places, places where all kinds of people can find something they like is a great thing.

Why is is this city so concerned with images of sex yet let their kids watch cable and play ultra violent video games.

It seems that Bricktown has a multiple personality disorder. It’s undeniably Mayberry-like in it’s wholesomeness over vast areas – the ballpark, Bass Pro, Toby Keith’s, Sonic. So much so, that I don’t feel we have to worry about Andy and Opie being run off anytime soon.

That being said, there are also a cornucopia of unclassy, hetero-normative, meat markets whose crowd makes it downright unpleasant to be in the area if you’re just there to grab a bite, take in a movie, or enjoy the canal.

These are flavors of ice cream that won’t mix easily. Striking the right balance, and setting the right standards will be a challenge for whatever committee has oversight.

This isn’t about whether the bar should exist. I could care less about what goes on inside the doors. I don’t have to go in if I don’t want to and my kids won’t be going in. So party it up inside with all the posters of nude or semi-nude people you want. It is about what is displayed to those outside who have no intention of going in. If you don’t have kids maybe you wouldn’t understand, but Bricktown can be family friendly on the outside of all businesses (it isn’t supposed to be Bourbon Street) and we can just choose to go into the business if we want to be exposed to anything like that. This isn’t that complicated and we aren’t telling anyone what they can or can’t do inside the bar.

There are a few stores at Penn Square mall with posters of “scantily dressed” women. There is also crime that takes place at Penn Square Mall with kids and families around.

Sometimes Oklahoma makes me laugh ;)

But Lee, are the scantily dressed women at Penn Square porn stars (as Steve mentioned)? Think it depends a lot on the context of those scantily dressed women. And even scantily dressed can be done with a certain amount of taste as to not offend most.

Wont even put what my Captcha was (funny but slightly inappropriate considering the thread)

I would personally not go to Rok Bar, but we need 20 somethings in this town. These establishments (and non-profit pub crawls – which was blown way out of proportion) should follow the laws, but beyond that we need to chill out. People will get too drunk, fights will happen just like in every other major city. Get over it.
