The Art of Signs

Pretty soon we’ll be hearing a new debate over signage in some of downtown’s districts. Granted, there are some bland, meaningless signs out there today that do nothing for the urban landscape. But why can’t we recapture the magic of yesterday? Something like this…

Neon is underrated.

you want downtown Oklahoma City to look like Moore?

Shaboom is a great song!!

Can you see a night skyline on TV and know what city it is? I can recognize Dallas, New York, Miami, New Orleans, and Chicago. Look at the power of the famous “Welcome to fabulous Las Vegas” sign. Now, can your out-of-state friends recognize OKC just by seeing our skyline?

Kris is right-on about neon. Is there such a thing as “America’s Neon City”? If not, then why not OKC?

I have three thoughts here. First, it would be nice to see some coloful signage in Downtown. But not just Bricktown or Midtown, but also on the buildings of the Central Business District. Kerr-McGee had the company’s logo atop their building, but SandRidge does not. What about a sign on the top of Park-Harvey or Regency Tower? I also miss the big Liberty Tower Weather Beacon. Someone bring it back.

Second, It would be cool to see the CBD skyscrapers outlined in neon, like in Dallas, Miami, etc.

Finally, if not neon, what? Perhaps some of the new LED technology. If new signs were all high-tech, would that give visitors a ‘futuristic’ impression; that OKC really IS a forward-looking, big-league city?

Fully functioning neon is cool. Neon that’s not maintained and only half-illuminates is not cool. I would be concerned how the neon would look 5-10 years out. I wouldn’t want districts to look like Radiator Springs did before Lightning McQueen fixed all the neon. Can you tell I have a 6-year old and I’ve seen this film a million times?

i vote for the fully functioning neon (and all other gases).

affirm on the neon….lite up downtown okc….it shows interest, activity and a downtown that no longer hangs in the shadows of a dying area….bring it back like the 40′s and 50′s when main street and broadway matched any major city street scene in the great eight state southwest, including Houston, Dallas and Kansas City….okc had signs the entire height of 10 story buildings….and icon signs like phillips 66 at the south jog on broadway….the time and temp sign on top of ole liberty that could be seen 15-20 miles away on a beautiful clear okc evening…..and others like bankers life, braniff, city bank, haliburton and champlin…..good stuff all!!

i say lite it up and along with it uniform street lighting brought to reality through the upcoming tif streescapes….for far too long downtown okc has made a half hearted attempy at downtown street lighting that does not reflect the many positive changes brought about by MAPS….that is a about to change….a final thought: if neon is to shine again in downtown okc the city must pass the necessary rules to govern its maintenance so the appearance looks first rate at all times……………..
