Ann Arbor, Michigan has also been testing LED Street lights. W

It would be nice to see something different than the mercury vapor and metal halide of old. If I had to choose between those two, I would choose metal halide. I much prefer the white light over the orange.

Anne and Addison aren't the only ones thinking that on some level. However, I can say that when I went conference in September, lighting suppliers there were readily admitting that the technology is changing daily and the life and actual costs are still unknown. Being on the cutting edge comes with the unknown life and cost issues...

That said, I love the look of LED, and I've read that the light emitted is much easier on the eyes (so to speak) - in other words, eyes adjust more easily and can ascertain more detail. Greensburg, Kansas went all LED after the tornado, to throw out another example.

Exactly what I was thinking, Anne. But then again I'm a bit cynical when it comes stuff like this...

While LED lights might be more expensive initially, surely they will cost the city less in the long run. LEDs last a very long time and use far less electricity if I understand correctly.

A simple google search pulled up multiple cities that either already have LED streetlights, will retrofit existing street poles with LED lights, or are planning on replacing the entire streetlight with LEDs.
I saw an article for Los Angeles and New York City both planning on going LED. And New York City already had a few test streetlights.
So, I'm not buying OGE's stance.

Madison, Wisconsin has a (relatively) large pilot program underway and smaller areas of cities in California have installed small systems for evaluation.
