“There is no track record with LED being used for street lamps.”

This statement is NOT true. Stay tuned….

Madison, Wisconsin has a (relatively) large pilot program underway and smaller areas of cities in California have installed small systems for evaluation.

steve thanks for the continuing updates and info.

A simple google search pulled up multiple cities that either already have LED streetlights, will retrofit existing street poles with LED lights, or are planning on replacing the entire streetlight with LEDs.
I saw an article for Los Angeles and New York City both planning on going LED. And New York City already had a few test streetlights.
So, I’m not buying OGE’s stance.

While LED lights might be more expensive initially, surely they will cost the city less in the long run. LEDs last a very long time and use far less electricity if I understand correctly.

Maybe THAT is why OG+E is discouraging their use? Food for thought…

Exactly what I was thinking, Anne. But then again I’m a bit cynical when it comes stuff like this…

Anne and Addison aren’t the only ones thinking that on some level. However, I can say that when I went conference in September, lighting suppliers there were readily admitting that the technology is changing daily and the life and actual costs are still unknown. Being on the cutting edge comes with the unknown life and cost issues…

That said, I love the look of LED, and I’ve read that the light emitted is much easier on the eyes (so to speak) – in other words, eyes adjust more easily and can ascertain more detail. Greensburg, Kansas went all LED after the tornado, to throw out another example.

Ann Arbor, Michigan has also been testing LED Street lights. W

It would be nice to see something different than the mercury vapor and metal halide of old. If I had to choose between those two, I would choose metal halide. I much prefer the white light over the orange.
