No guys, he’s not the “Republican mayor Oklahoma City.” He’s the non-partisan mayor of Oklahoma City. A lot of observers I know say this non-partisan nature of City Hall is what has kept it professional and efficient, and unlike the usually corrupt dysfunctional Oklahoma County governement. People inside and outside of City Hall widely believe a key to Oklahoma City resurgence the past 20 years is partially due to the non-partisian nature of the council – there isn’t a Republican and Democratic wing fighting each other.

This isn’t the first time we’ve had Mayor Mick with partisian politics being attached to his office. I’ll ask Monday how this one transpired.

I really don’t see how this is a partisan issue in any way beyond refering to him as the “Republican” mayor of OKC. I’d be frustrated too, regardless of what party was in the White House.

Agreed. I’ve read some interesting artciles/blog posts regarding this, and they’ve mainly been from Democratic-leaning sites, and they all say skipping was a big mistake. It’s too bad the media has to point out “The Republican Mayor”…, when I never see that actually brought up around here.

I guess all I’m saying is if you like how City Hall in Tulsa is performing, or admire the way Oklahoma County government has been working, by all means, encourage Republican/Democratic tags at OKC City Hall even though it’s supposed to be non-partisan.

One final note: I’m not suggesting there’s anything wrong in what Mayor Mick was saying. Further, I’d add he comes off as a very good representative for Oklahoma City – well spoken, intelligent, not frothing at the mouth.

Mayor Mick’s broadcasting background really helps OKC from a PR standpoint. He is well-spoken and articulate, without coming across as hostile.

I think the Mayor did a great job of respectfully taking issue with the President’s actions, while managing to focus positive attention on OKC.

Partisan politics are certainly bad for the city, but I don’t think this crossed the line.

What Blair said.

Steve, With all dues respect, the non-partisan tag is a mere technicality. Mick Cornett ran for Congress as a – Republican! He is often mentioned for higher office, running as a – Republican! The fact is Mick Cornett IS a Republican. Love the blog!

I agree with Blair. Furthermore, Steve, could this “Republican tagging” have something to do with Mick touting that he’s part of the Republican Mayors Association? Check out his BIO on the OKC.GOV website, in which he touts he is a part of.

He’s not a “Republican mayor” anymore than Kirk Humphreys was a “Baptist Mayor.” He’s officially a non-partisan mayor who happens to be a Republican in his personal politics.
Folks, this does matter… do you really want a MAPS 3 or anything else in the future to be argued based on which party is for or against it? That’s worked really well so far for Tulsa and Oklahoma County.

Thanks for putting this video up, Steve, it’s the first time I’ve gotten to see it…but shouldn’t the negative tone this blog was set up in be taken at MSNBC? I expected to see/hear him call himself “The Republican Mayor” the way this blog was set up. He really can’t control what MSNBC puts up on the screen during a live national broadcast.

Casey, can you just ask your dad his thoughts on the topic?

Steven, on what topic? I agree with Lackmeyer that city politics is and SHOULD be non-partisian. There is nothing I should ask my dad because he didn’t make a statement on anything dealing with that issue, MSNBC did. I do, however, think he represented OKC very well during the interview (as I always think he does) and am very proud of what he does for the city I CHOOSE TO LIVE in. Sometimes I wonder how different things would be if he had lost back in ’04. Besides, I’m on vacation in Europe, maybe I’ll ask him when I get back :) By the way, my captcha says “18 gigglers” ha

Casey, your dad does a lot to reverse the out-dated negative stereotypes of our city. And Steven, at some point the son has to be allowed to be their own man. Blair Humphreys is not Kirk Humphreys and Casey Humphreys is not Mick Humphreys. (For example: I really doubt Mayor Mick would travel across Europe “couch surfing”). I suspect Mayor Mick hears of things on this blog and elsewhere that might interest him and if he had a major disagreement with me I’d probably hear from someone with his office. This post doesn’t attack Mayor Mick – it questions the idea of Oklahoma City having a “Republican mayor.”
That’s all.

keep asking the hard questions, steve. it’s not what makes you brilliant, it’s what makes you a journalist.

Cornett barely talked about OKC. He was brought on the show to criticize organized labor and Obama. So he played the role of a partisan hack, which is what he is.
