The Start of the Downtown Healthy Eating Page
Thanks to Steve Mason, owner of Earl’s and the Iguana Mexican Grill, to be the first to respond to my request for nutritional info on healthy menu items.
Working and/or living downtown is great because it has so many wonderful locally owned restaurants. But finding nutritional information and identifying healthy items is typically more challenging at the local restaurants than at chains.
So for someone like myself, someone who prefers the local eateries, the options end up being the chains.
So let’s start off with Mason …
Earls
- Turkey Dinner: Corn on the cob, side salad w/ tomato basil vinaigrette no cheese- 460 total calories/52 calories from fat, 5 grams fiber.
Iguana Grill
- Tilapia Salad with Mixed Greens, roasted corn, pico di gallo, and roasted red bell peppers, tossed with a light mezcal lime vinaigrette
- Sopa De Maiz- Completely Vegan Soup with roasted poblano chiles, Roasted corn, green curry, coconut milk, and shiitake mushroom dumplings
- Ahi Tuna Tostadas- Seared Ahi, Mango, Jicama, Cucumber
- Fish tacos-Smoked Tilapia, White Corn Tortillias, Pico Di gallo, and jicama slaw

Yes Ryan, though I’m hoping that info is still forthcoming.
As for carbs… will do what I can for you on that.
Great, healthy vegan fare:
Snow Pea in the food court: Steamed veggies (with or without tofu) and brown rice. Super filling!
The Mantel: Portobello mushroom sandwich made vegan (skip the cheese, butter and aioli). Still fabulous, even without the fatty extras because of the wonderful balsamic reduction they use. Instead of pasta or fries on the side, substitute small spinach salad – skip the cheese. If you can keep away from the temptation of the house bread – you’ll be light and happy and satisfied!
Hey Steve, I’m sure you’ve heard about Senate Bill 1135.

This would really help with finding downtown (and other) eating options. Unless it’s a detriment to small local businesses, I think it would be a great thing. From the article, it looks like it may only be required to restaurants with more than 15 locations in the state, which I imagine isn’t many restaurants.
You never know what’s going to happen with a bill like that. But this reminds me – I’ve got nutritional info for Iguana Grill and I’ll be posting it early next week.

Like this Steve! That Sopa De Maiz is yummmmmy!
