I have a few – my good friend Doug Loudenback, for one, who hosts www.dougdawg.blogspot.com. Add to that Charles Hill’s  www.dustbury.com and Blair Humphreys’ www.imaginativeamerica.com. But today I want to draw your attention to a voice that should not be stiffled – Michael Bates, who has opened my eyes to alternative ideas and views pertaining to urban issues and planning. If you’ve not visited www.batesline.com, do so.

I don’t believe it’s the first time he’s been sued by the Tulsa Whirled, so he’ll be alright.

It’ll be interesting to see how that plays out. On the one hand, I can see why the World would want to protect its reputation when it comes to circulation figures. On the other hand, is it more trouble than it’s worth to sue the guy? Even if he did indeed libel the newspaper?

I hear people screaming this is a 1st Amendment issue. The 1st Amendment doesn’t give you license to write untrue (and damaging) things (don’t know whether it’s untrue or not) and not face the consequences.

Hey, thanks, Steve! It happens that you are one of my favorites, too! Small world …

What Michael Bates said about the Whirled was true. He didn’t fabricate information to intentionally damage the Whirled. He used the truth to intentionally damage the Whirled..there’s a difference.

Thanks for your kind words, Steve. Your blog is one of my favorites, too, and you’ve honored me greatly by listing me alongside such distinguished bloggers as Messrs. Hill, Loudenback, and Humphreys.

As a Tulsan, I can tell you I’ve learned more about the true inner workings of this town from Michael Bates than I ever did from the Tulsa World.
The vast majority of Tulsans support you, Michael. The truth speaks and will set you free, brother.

Steve, should you not know, your blog is nominated for the Best Commercial Blog in Okiedoke’s 2008 Blog Awards … see http://okiedoke.com/ok/08awards/index.html. And quite rightly so. I, too, enjoy Michael Bates’ fine (previous award winner and nominated again) blog as well as Blair’s blog … my nomination of Blair’s blog was not sufficient, though, for him to make the final nominations cut this year. Next year. And what can you say about Chaz’ Dustbury blog? At 1,701,178 hits (as this is written), he is obviously doing something right!

By the way, anyone that has to put up with the Tulsa World like Michael Bates does deserves blog of the year, as far as I’m concerned. If his blog is listed in that category, he’ll get my vote … if not there, in some other category. And that’s the way it is.

Yes, Michael is in the best overall blog. And I cast my vote for him in that category.

Not sure what I did to merit being part of this conversation, but thank you!

And Doug, thank you for the nomination. That was really nice of you.

Good luck to you all! The honors are all much deserved!
