More Predictions for 2009

Today’s Main Street column delves into predictions for 2009.

Here’s some more:

- More retail will emerge along Automobile Alley.

- Politics aside, the change of administrations at the White House will result in more funding for the new I-40 Crosstown Expressway and a chance that the city’s full ambitions for a downtown boulevard might be realized.

- At least one significant downtown employer will end up filing for bankruptcy.

- A worthy permanent tribute will emerge to honor retiring OKC Museum of Art director Carolyn Hill.

- The Bricktown Urban Design Committee will face some of its toughest challenges yet.

- Jeff Brown, owner of the Miller Jackson Building, will remember all of the nice stories I’ve written about him over the years and will forgive me for harassing him over the restrooms next to Hooters.

- The “junkyard” at NW 10 and Harvey will still be in place this time next year.

I’d like to see Dale Chihuly commissioned to build a large, very bright chandelier as a tribute to Mrs. Hill. It should be included in the permanent Chihuly collection, but just like the Tower in the atrium, displayed separately and distinctly.

Also, perhaps the additional Crosstown funding could be used to accelerate construction of the new roads.

I don’t think another Chihuly sculpture is unique enough. I think she just needs a nice bronze statue in her likeness, in a prominent location.
