Online Video

A year ago I asked for readers’ feedback on whether to launch a blog. I took all of your ideas seriously and I think many of them are reflected in what you see today, OKC Central — All about downtown OKC. Now I’m being asked to consider a weekly online downtown video show. Now, let’s get a couple things out of the way; first, I know I have a face made for the written word. But there are people I deal with day to day on the beat who believe routine conversations I have with contacts could make for an interesting show. And there might be a way to put the spotlight on downtown in a way that’s not been possible before. So, don’t hold back… what do you think?

Hey Steve – I like it. I’m a fan of the idea. The online videos Newsok has been posting have been a great addition to the site. And I dont’ think You wouldn’t need a particularly high level of production value – just give us good ol’ Youtube quality web video and it could be a hit.

Great job on the blog, I really enjoy reading it and find it a nice addition to your traditional reporting.

cheers,
Michael

Regular video snipits & tidbits on the web, I’d watch ‘em… A whole “show” sounds like work. You thinking webshow or TV show?

I think there are pros and cons to the idea, but right now the cons outweigh the pros in my mind. First, I have no idea what your daily schedule is like Steve, but based on the sheer number of your blogs and articles I would imagine you are generally a pretty busy guy so putting together an online show will take at least some time away from either your stories or blogs. I also don’t want to oversell the value of production, but you don’t want a second-rate-looking show about downtown in the capital of Oklahoma which can be seen throughout the country (I have read the comments the obnoxious Seattle people have said and are saying on their papers’ websites about our sports folks re: the Thunder videos…yes, they were just bitter people, but still…). Additionally, I think it is a fine idea to have an occassional webshow regarding significant developments in order to give greater perspective, the Devon Tower would have been a good one, but a weekly show would seem to be too great a demand on your time and, even though you may want to be superman…or just Clark Kent perhaps, I’m sure a story or two may slip through the cracks. So, unless you are planning to get a flunky to do your running around town getting scoops…if it came to a vote, and based on the information we have, I would err on the side of “no” for now.

I would have to agree with Brent on this one. If it takes up too much time it could hurt your coverage of the important stories. But an occasional show would be great!

What we’re talking about is a web show (to my knowledge), though it wouldn’t surprise me if NewsOK.tv someday ends up on cable in some format. My participation would involve generating ideas, sitting down for interviews. All of the video and editing would be done by NewsOk. As for time demand … well, that’s my big concern too. This would require a structure that would not involve much more than me meeting with someone once a week.

I would watch every week.

It’s a great idea. I think it’s the direction news print is headed. You could get so much more content than you could in the paper.

Maybe every other week then?

I agree. There is a MUCH NEEDED niche for this, especially locally since we are media starved here. I too worry about the time it would take to do this right, but think the pros outweigh the cons unlike some of the others above. I agree, maybe just a once a week show and then take it from there down the road. This is definitely where print and your journalism career is headed if you stay in the business long-term. You don’t even have to be in the shot, just your audio and show the video of the interviewee.
