My Trip to Downtown Tulsa

As noted here yesterday, I spent Wednesday in downtown Tulsa.

Some observations:

- The convention center is badly outdated and wireless Internet is non-existant. I suspect it’s easier to get a wireless signal in the mountains along the Afganistan-Pakistan border (it must be from all the posting those folks do online!)

- Getting around downtown Tulsa is a lot easier with the new wayfinding signage, designed, I believe, by the same folks who worked on downtown OKC’s signs. For some reason, I like Tulsa’s better. What do you think?

I also noted that property owners in downtown Tulsa seem to do more to let people know at street level what buildings they are passing – even if it involves a simple banner as shown below:

I’m still stunned by BOK Center. The area around it, however, is desolate.

Tulsa’s downtown garages also seem to have more character than most of what’s found in OKC:

Can’t agree with you on the wayfinding signage. Ours are simple and classy, while theirs look a little too Disneyfied. Seems like they tried to hard to make them look “art deco”.

The art deco fits nicely with Tulsa architecture. I do like the simplicity of our signage, though.

The garages in Tulsa are definitely better! It’s a shame, too.

With so many extreme changes with the paper, it sure is nice to have you covering your area so consistently and well. I read the business section every day to see what you’re covering next! Thanks Steve!

Lee, I can’t begin to tell you how much I appreciate your kind words. Timing couldn’t have been better.

Their newer garages do look nice, but so do ours.

The Galleria garage and the county garage expansion are very attractive in their own ways.

I liked the signage til I saw the purply art deco bit… Really do look like they came from Cinderella Land. I love the banners identifying the buildings for pedestrians and I can’t wait to go see something at the amazing, beautiful BOK center to get up close and personal with it.

Oh, and Steve you know you’re everyone’s favorite reporter right? Just making sure.

Steve…you do a fine job for OKC. I’d be glad to give you a personal tour of Tulsa and it’s downtown and surrounding areas. I think you’d be surprised.

FYI…I happened to be in OKC yesterday. I saw you in McNellie’s…

Patrick send me an email on how to contact you and we’ll see if can make that happen this next month. I’d be glad to take you up on your offer as time allows.
- Steve
