Bye Bye Nursing Home

Bert Belanger is continuing his clean-up at NW 13 and Broadway. First, the dilapidated former sex offender housing was razed, now the boarded-up nursing home (neither have been mourned by downtowners).

So what’s next?

Apartments! But those trains need to shut up first.

Apartments would be great. And they would come with the smell of fresh-baked bread coming in your windows everyday…

I say if youre so worried about the noise from the trains then move to bethany, this area is not for you. I lived near 15th and Robinson and heard the trains every nite/morning. You get used to them, I actually miss hearing them now.

What area does he actually own? Does he own just where the old houses and the nursing home are? Does he own the area behind those two places? If he does, that would be a great place for a small “lifestyle center” with a little retail facing Broadway, offices facing away toward Broadway Dr (not to be confused with Broadway Ave) then aparments and condos in the larger area. You could make that mesh with redoing the streets and making them brick or some sort of stamped concrete.

Actually, I live at Walker and 20th, and I LOVE the trains. However, having spent time in the area, sitting next to the tracks as a train blows by, I can tell the true difference from being a few blocks away to being next to the tracks. Besides, we may love the sound, but many, many others don’t and don’t want to be disturbed by 2.5 hours of train horn a day.

I wish I had noticed they were tearing down the nursing home. My aunt worked there as a nurse, and yours truly spent many an evening trying to push residents around in their wheelchairs. It was a funhouse for a toddler, but prolly not so nice for the residents.
