Combat training of all types is very important to all of the services. There was a time where military thinkers felt that Bayonet’s were no longer necessary and a thing of the past. I disagree. Bayonet’s as well as unarmed self defense techniques (Army Combatives & Marine Corps Martial Arts Program (MCMAP)) give US Soldiers and Marines lethal and non-lethal skills that can be employed throughout the various spectrums of military operations. Some feel a need for more focus on weapons training versus hand to hand combat. Weapons are important but weapons by themselves do not the enemy. The Marine, Soldier, Sailor or Airman behind that weapon is what kills. Regardless of the weapon military training instills the necessary will to kill the enemies of the United States. The paradox is that at the same time we cannot lose our compassion and humanity by glorifying killing or instilling a trill of killing.
