  • Many caseworkers note an everincreasing share of U.S. children growing up in homes without both biological parents and say the risk of child abuse is markedly higher in nontraditional family structures.
  • Students with disabilities are creating works of art using specially designed equipment from Wisconsin-based Arts for All.
  • “Our Body: The Universe Within” exhibit opened at Science Museum Oklahoma on Nov. 17, giving visitors a look at real human bodies.
  • The Oklahoma City Zoo announced the birth of four lion cubs — a male and three females.
  • Health and school officials asked parents to be cautious, but not alarmed, and help children practice good hygiene after antibiotic-esistant staph infections were found at Mustang High School and Edmond Memorial High School.
  • Checotah native Carrie Underwood won three awards at the American Music Awards, including favorite female country artist, favorite country album for “Some Hearts” and the T-Mobile text-in award.
  • A group of 29 metro cities, four counties, the Oklahoma Turnpike Authority and the state Transportation Department now have a regional snow route in place on major streets to give motorists safe routes to work during major snowstorms.
  • The Shawnee Tribe has a contract to buy property in Oklahoma City and wants to build a casino, hotel, other attractions and tribal headquarters on 104 acres on the west side of Interstate 35 between Britton Road and Wilshire Boulevard.
  • Twelve airmen and nine civilians from Tinker Air Force Base received medals for their role in salvaging a B-1B bomber after an engine fire left the jet crippled on an airstrip in Afghanistan.
