Crossing the Bridge

Whenever I fly on an airplane, in the back of mind I know there is a small chance that the plane might crash. Whenever I’m driving on the road, I know there is a chance I could wreck into someone else’s vehicle.

But until Wednesday, I never envisioned driving my car on a bridge and having the bridge collapse beneath me. I bet the motorists who were driving on Interstate 35W in Minneapolis on Wednesday never envisioned it either.

I can’t imagine the horror those victims must have felt when the bridge fell and their vehicles plunged into the Mississippi River.  These people were just trying to drive home after long day at work and all of a sudden they fell 60 feet into a body of water.

I hope we soon find out the official cause of the collapse, and hopefully this type of tragedy doesn’t happen again.

The most disturbing thing I’ve heard is Craig Crawford commenting on TV that the dirty little secret in Congress is that there are a lot of these bridges in need of repair out there, but the philosophy has been that it’s cheaper to let them fall and build them from scratch than to try to repair them. Lives don’t mean as much as money, though lawmakers of both parties seem to have plenty to spread around to pet projects such as peanut museums and bridges to nowhere and whatnot. Infrastructure and public safety isn’t as important.
