Miranda Kerr as Wonder Woman (pictures, video)

Supermodel Miranda Kerr dressed up as Wonder Woman for a recent photo shoot for Australia’s Grazia magazine.

She posed with the Australian flag in a Wonder Woman suit designed by fashion designer Alex Perry.

Check out the video below; at a certain point she loses the costume and appears to be nude except for the Australian flag:

Grazia fashion director Thelma McQuillan defended the magazine taking the risk of filming a near-naked Miranda Kerr in an Australian flag, and wearing the costume of an American icon.

“We’re a fashion magazine – and this is art,” says Thelma. “We’re taking a risk – because Wonder Woman is a globally recognised icon and not just anyone could pull it off. But Miranda is an Australian icon herself. She’s the star who, time and time again, our readers say they most admire; a businesswoman, a wife, a mum. She is our wonder woman. And she has the presence to pull this recreation off.”

Erica Durance as Wonder Woman on “Harry’s Law”

Erica Durance dons a Wonder Woman costume — in fact, the costume that was used for the Adrianne Palicki pilot — in an upcoming episode of “Harry’s Law.”   Durance played Lois Lane on “Smallville,” and in one episode donned “Amazon Princess” garb.

She’s even closer to Wonder Woman in the “Harry’s Law” episode, where she plays a psychologically damaged woman who retreats into a Wonder Woman persona.

She tells TV Guide it was “a little daunting.”

“I’m really very respectful of the people that love this character,” she said. “I do take it very seriously. As a side note, just to be light about it, any woman wearing tight pants is not super excited the first time she puts them on. [Laughs] I wasn’t exactly, you know, tight pants- or underwear-ready.”

She said, in fact, she was happier to wear the long pants of Wonder Woman than the more traditional short-shorts.

“I’m very grateful for the pants,” she told TV Guide. “I know that people were very excited about the underwear and seeing them. To be quite frank, I don’t know if I could’ve done the underwear justice at this point in time and it might have been more upsetting for people to see me in them than to not, so I think the pants are a safe bet for me.”

Durance’s episode of “Harry’s Law” airs Wednesday, Jan. 11 at 8 p.m. Central on NBC.

Adrianne Palicki: Nerdage’s #3 actress with geek appeal

Former “Lone Star” and “Friday Night Lights” star Adrianne Palicki made quite an impact on Nerdage readers this year, for filming a pilot that at this point, doesn’t appear that it’s going to air anywhere.

Palicki was cast as Wonder Woman in the David E. Kelley pilot of the same name.

Though the pilot may eventually find its way to TV or online in some fashion, NBC passed on it for the fall roster.

She’s set to co-star in the “Red Dawn” remake with Chris Hemsworth (“Thor”), but that movie has also faced difficulties with getting released, after a post-filming decision to change the U.S. invaders from the Chinese to the North Koreans.

This follows her last series, “Lone Star,” being short-lived despite critical acclaim.   Surely, someone will find a way to get more of Adrianne Palicki on our TV screens soon.  In the meantime, she can be seen in “Elektra Luxx,” starring Carla Gugino, coming to DVD later this month.

Lynda Carter as Wonder Woman

With a new “Wonder Woman” pilot in the works for the past year, former Wonder Woman Lynda Carter became a popular topic for searches, page views, interviews and more.   Enough so that she’s Nerdage’s #4 actress with geek appeal for 2011.

She recently told Zap2it (as quoted at Comicbookmovie) that she was disappointed that the pilot, which starred Adrianne Palicki, didn’t get picked up by NBC.

“I was really interested and I was really happy that they were going to redo it, because the (Wonder Woman) story is a great story and I think it needs to be retold. It needs to go to another generation of people,” she said.

“I was disappointed that it didn’t work out, and I don’t have a clue as to why it didn’t work out (or) what the problems were. But you never know, things can still get resurrected or retooled, so I haven’t given up (hope).”

Tanit Phoenix: Nerdage’s #8 actress with geek appeal

Tanit Phoenix

What a difference a rumor makes.  After rumors circulated about South African actress Tanit Phoenix reading for the “Wonder Woman” role, interest in her on the Nerdage blog skyrocketed, with Tanit Phoenix coming in at No. 8 on Nerdage’s list of actresses with geek appeal.

The model-turned-actress had a busy 2010, appearing in “Lost Boys: The Thirst” and “Death Race 2,” among others.  She now appears on Showtime’s “Femme Fatales” as Lilith.

According to IMDB, she’s set to appear in “Latin Quarter,” about the wild youth of Pablo Picasso, with Wilmer Valderrama and Martin Landau.  Also upcoming for Phoenix is “Safe House,” starring Denzel Washington and Ryan Reynolds, set for release in Feb. 2012.

It looks like even without star-spangled underwear, we’ll be seeing a lot more of Tanit Phoenix in the future.

Superman’s fight against the KKK and more examined in “War, Politics and Superheroes”

War, Politics and Superheroes

War, Politics and Superheroes by Marc DiPaolo

What’s Superman’s stance on the death penalty? Who might Spider-Man vote for? Marc DiPaolo, assistant professor of English and film at Oklahoma City University, has examined the political leanings, often subtextual, of comic-book superheroes.

“War, Politics, and Superheroes: Ethics and Propaganda in Comics and Film” was released by McFarland and Co. last month.

Will another network pick up Adrianne Palicki’s Wonder Woman?

Entertainment Weekly and other sources are reporting that NBC has passed on the David E. Kelley “Wonder Woman” series, starring Adrianne Palicki (“Friday Night Lights”).

Does that mean that’s the end for the amazing Amazon on television?  The online reaction to the costume was mixed, and the reaction to leaked script pages was downright frosty.

The “Aquaman” pilot that wasn’t picked up by the CW was eventually released on iTunes, so it’s possible that Warner Bros. will try to recoup some of its costs there.  Another option – kind of an intriguing one – is that the CW might try to fill the superhero-sized hole in its lineup left by “Smallville” by picking up the “Wonder Woman” series.

Adrianne Palicki is certainly due to eventually break out as a star – she was praised for her work in the short-lived “Lone Star” last season as well.  While I think she could develop into a Wonder Woman worth watching, it appears the pilot may have had some issues.

Adrianne Palicki’s Wonder Woman will wear short pants, too

Wonder Woman, as played by Adrianne Palicki, will have yet another look, according to TV Line. In addition to the shiny costume with blue boots (shown above) and the second, similar look with red boots revealed in recent set photos, Palicki will also wear a costume revealing more leg, similar to Lynda Carter’s 1970s look.

“There was an initial outcry about the long pants – you know, skintight pants as opposed to those little shorts [worn by Lynda Carter in the original TV series],” NBC’s Robert Greenblatt tells TVLine.com. “But the shorts were always planned. They are actually used in the final confrontation when she beats Veronica Cale (played by Elizabeth Hurley).”
