Kevin Smith, Alex Ross, Stephen King, and even some Geoff Johns. Sounds like a good start to the comic-book week.
Kevin Smith returns to DC Comics with “Batman: Cacophony.” Will comics fans forgive Smith for leaving them hanging with “Daredevil: The Target”? Is Smith’s name still a huge draw? I would assume Kevin Smith + Batman would still be a pretty solid seller.
“New Krypton” continues in ”Action Comics” #871; Marvel ships its two Stephen King adaptations; Alex Ross illustrates the “Justice Society of America Kingdom Come Special: Superman.”

“New Krypton” continues in the “Adventure Comics starring the Guardian” special, and Marvel kicks off “Ultimatum.”

One of the largest weeks in recent memory, my friends. ”Final Crisis” finds its way to shelves! “Secret Invasion” is released! So, Marvel and DC’s biggest books go head to head. The new Captain America faces an old foe in issue #43. And that’s not all! IDW’s hit “Angel: The Fall” releases its 13th issue, G.I. Joe gets a new beginning, and Cyblade gets a new first issue. Check out the full list and commentary after the break.

By way of self-congratulation, let me point out that this is the 1000th post on Nerdage! Thanks to those of you who have contributed, those of you who comment, and those of you who are reading. Couldn’t do it without you. Now, on to this week’s comics. ”Amazing Spider-Man” wraps up the popular “New Ways to Die” storyline, two “Final Crisis” tie-in miniseries issues ship, and Jimmy Olsen stars in a special that leads into “New Krypton.” Full list and commentary after the break.

The Lone Ranger is back in action this week, as the Lone Ranger and Tonto hunt for a bloody killer. The Brainiac storyline concludes this week in “Action Comics” 870, leading into the “New Krypton” story. The award-winning novel “Ender’s Game” is adapted to comic-book form. A third, in-continuity “Marvel Zombies” series hits, this time drawn by Fred Van Lente. And finally, IDW’s “Presidential Material” one-shots, profiling Barack Obama and John McCain, ship this week.

We could talk about other comics – and I will here shortly - but let me just congratulate Ed Brubaker and Steve Epting on the conclusion of “The Death of Captain America” saga. Be sure to pick up issue #42, on sale Wednesday. The “cursing Batman” nonsense that caused some retailers to look shortsighted and greedy and DC Comics to look unprofessional (really, no one came out well, here) comes out this week in its hopefully properly edited edition. It’s a doubleheader of highly anticipated Superman comic books this week. The penultimate issue of the “Brainiac” storyline in “Action Comics” comes out this week, after a short delay for a printing error. (Apparently nothing as nefarious as the “All-Star Batman” printing error.) And “All-Star Superman” wraps up the Grant Morrison-Frank Quitely story with issue #12.
If you missed the Norman, Okla., issue of “Local,” by Brian Wood and Ryan Kelly, the entire storyline is now collected in one hardcover, also on sale this week.

The biggest releases this week are likely the doubleheader of Stephen King comic books. The third “Dark Tower” series, ”Treachery,” kicks off, as does the comic book adaptation of Stephen King’s “The Stand.” Fabian Nicieza wraps up his Batgirl story in “Batman Confidential.” And there’s that little thing we’re calling “Secret Invasion.”
