Fighting off an illness, so, sorry for the lack of commentary today.
I am looking forward to reading one of Steve Gerber’s final stories in the “Dr. Fate” collection shipping this week. Full list after the break.

Feels like a big week this week! Superman gets the spotlight in “Final Crisis: Superman Beyond,” written by Grant Morrison. Brad Meltzer returns to comics with “DC Universe Last Will and Testament,” drawn by Adam Kubert. Marvel brings some heat as well, as Mark Millar’s “Wolverine” continues, the second part of Amazing Spider-Man’s “New Ways to Die” hits, and Spidey is drawn into Secret Invasion with “Secret Invasion: Spider-Man.” Full list and commentary after the break.
“Amazing Spider-Man” kicks off “New Ways to Die” in issue #568. I can’t decide if “New Ways to Die” sounds more like a Guns N Roses song (”Welcome to the jungle, Spidey… find new ways to die!”) or a James Bond title. (007 in … New Ways to Die!). Either way, you’ve got the return of Eddie Brock as Venom, you’ve got some guy called Anti-Venom, you’ve got the Thunderbolts after Spider-Man. By Dan Slott, Mark Waid and John Romita Jr.
Also this week, a big “Final Crisis” tie-in that I think I’ll enjoy more than the regular book: “Final Crisis: Legion of Three Worlds” by Geoff Johns and George Perez.
Full list and commentary after the break.
Thor joins the Secret in “Secret Invasion: Thor” No. 1, while the main series continues this week with “Secret Invasion” No. 5. Meanwhile, Batman continues to face a dire psychological threat in “Batman” No. 679, part of the “Batman RIP” storyline. Full list and commentary after the break.
It’s the end of the world — and the Authority feels fine? The “Nova” writing team of Dan Abnett and Andy Lanning come on board for “The Authority” #1. Also included, part 2 of the John Lynch back-up story by Christos N. Gage and Trevor Hairsine. DC releases the third part of mega-event “Final Crisis” today, by Grant Morrison and J.G. Jones. Joss Whedon and Karl Moline create “Buffy: The Vampire Slayer” #17, in which Buffy and Fray must team up.
Full list and commentary after the break.
Check out “Comic Book Comics” #2 for Fred Van Lente and Ryan Dunlavey’s humorous take on the history of the American comic-book industry. Geoff Johns and Jerry Ordway share Power Girl’s story in “Justice Society of America” Annual 1, with a cover by Alex Ross. Meanwhile, Mark Millar and Steve McNiven continue the tale of Old Man Logan in “Wolverine” #67. Full list and commentary (and, Cody, if you’re here, it’s a lot more commentary than last week) after the break.
It’s an X-heavy week, as “Uncanny X-Men” No. 500 brings Matt Fraction onto the writing team with Ed Brubaker. Greg Land takes over as penciller. “X-Files” No. 0 reintroduces FBI agents Fox Mulder and Dana Scully to comic books.
Mark Millar and Tony Harris launch “War Heroes” for Image, and Top Cow begins its “Broken Trinity” crossover. Full list and commentary after the break.
Angel’s “Spike” gets his own “After the Fall” series, and Conan’s relaunch gets a new No. 1 (following an issue 0) as “Conan the Cimmerian.” Full list and commentary after the break.
Remember, Diamond Comics, the primary distributor of comic books in the United States, has delayed shipments of comic books this week due to the Independence Day holiday. So, look for new comics this week on Thursday. That said, it’s a pretty good week of comics, with the launch of Jeph Loeb and Tim Sale’s “Captain America White,” a new issue of Geoff Johns’ “Action Comics” and the latest installment of Marvel’s “Secret Invasion.” Full list and commentary after the break.
Warren Ellis kicks off his run on “Astonishing X-Men,” and Mike Kunkel begins his “Shazam!” run. Full list and commentary after the break.
