You could do a lot worse than to get to the comic book store today, where three pretty brilliant comics are getting repackaged in new formats.
First, Starman Omnibus vol. 3 continues the collection of James Robinson’s “Starman” series, about reluctant hero Jack Knight. Starman is often, and correctly, thrown around in “Best of the 1990s” discussions.
While you probably know about Ed Brubaker’s “Captain America” 600, hitting shops today (if they didn’t opt to get them Monday), you may not realize that the latest issue of his “Incognito” series and the re-collection of his “Sleeper” stories are released today, too. “Sleeper” is a terribly under-rated series from WildStorm that was basically a spy series with superhero trappings. If you’re enjoying “Cap,” but could handle something aimed at a slightly more mature audience, give “Sleeper” a look.
And finally, “Nexus: As it Happened” is a black-and-white, affordable reprint of
the early issues of Steve Rude and Mike Baron’s “Nexus.” One of the best series of the 1980s and a multiple Eisner Award winner. Nexus, a man in the year 2814, is plagued by nightmares of mass-murderers. Given powers by a mysterious force, he is compelled to find these killers and execute them. “Nexus: As It Happened” Vol. 1 reprints seven issues of “Nexus”: Vol. 1, 1-3, and Vol. 2, 1-4.
Also out this week, a new printing of Garth Ennis’ acclaimed “Hitman” series, and the latest issue of “Supergirl” by Tulsa native Sterling Gates. From Image, “Invincible” #63 hits stands, as does a new “Dead@17″ by Josh Howard. The collection of Mike Oeming’s “Mice Templar” is released, as well.
In addition to “Captain America,” Marvel zeroes in on the Cajun mutant Gambit with “X-Men Origins: Gambit.” You can find the full list of this week’s releases here.

Three big releases this week, from the three biggest publishers. DC releases Batman #686, written by Neil Gaiman; Image celebrates the 75th issue of “The Darkness,” and Marvel celebrates the 600th issue of “Thor.” Humorously enough, both “The Darkness” and “Thor” shifted from lower-numbered issues to celebrate the anniversary issues. But that’s OK with me, I like the higher numbers better.

Obviously, the big reason to get excited today is the release of the long-awaited Scott Pilgrim Vol. 5. Jeff Parker’s “Agents of Atlas” kicks off from Marvel, as does “Secret Warriors” by writers Brian Michael Bendis and Jonathan Hickman. The slow-in-coming but pretty great “Final Crisis: Legion of Three Worlds” No. 3 also ships. Full list and commentary after the break. List from Previewsworld.com.

A happy new comics day, and a happy birthday to my wife, Annette, who is an unsung hero for what she contributes to my store, my family and helping me as a writer.
On to the comics! “Supergirl” gets a “Faces of Evil” tie-in as the “Who Is Superwoman?” story begins. “Faces of Evil: Deathstroke” is a one-shot focusing on the Titans villain. And Marvel launches “Dark Avengers” as part of its “Dark Reign” storyline. Full list and commentary after the break.

Sterling Gates’ entry in the “Faces of Evil” event hits today: “Faces of Evil: Prometheus.” I guess we’ll see if Batman is dead, alive, or whatever in “Final Crisis” #6. Incoming President Barack Obama makes a stop in “Amazing Spider-Man.” Full list and commentary after the break. List from Previewsworld.com.
