Avengers vs X-Men 0

“Avengers Vs. X-Men” #0 kicks off Marvel’s most hotly-ordered event since “Civil War,” an issue that sold out from the publisher in only a few hours on sale. The comic, by Jason Aaron, Brian Michael Bendis and Frank Cho features two stories, one from the X-Men side and one from the Avengers side, as the conflict between the two teams nears.

The Scarlet Witch stars in the Avengers tale, while the X-Men one focuses on Hope Summers. Both of these characters will be at the center of the ongoing AVX conflict, and the story gets you up to speed on their current situations.

Bloodstrike 26

Crazy, in your face undead action marks the revamp of “Bloodstrike,” by Tim Seeley and Franchesco Gaston. The latest “Extreme” relaunch re-introduces Cabbot, the last remaining member of the undead Bloodstrike team. He’s used as a weapon in America’s war on terror. The action of the issue is Cabbot’s latest mission against techno-zombies; through a visit with his therapist, you find out Cabbot’s backstory and Bloodstrike’s history. Cabbot is losing his faith in his mission as the horror-action series restarts.

X-Men Legacy 264.

Christos N. Gage and Rafa Sandoval are the creative team for X-Men Legacy 264.

“Legacy” has been the book that seems geared to appeal to the hardcore X-Fans, and this issue brings in two semi-obscure X-related characters, Mimic and Weapon Omega. Weapon Omega arrives at Jean Grey School for Higher Learning, and he’s a mutant time bomb. Hank McCoy and the X-Men must try to disarm him before he detonates. Rogue is a key part of this issue, which ends on a cliffhanger.

Writer Jason Aaron, X-Men senior editor Nick Lowe discuss ‘Avengers vs. X-Men’

Overland Park, Kan.  —  The Avengers  —  including Captain America, Iron Man, and Thor  —  are some of Marvel’s highest-profile heroes, set for a new movie release on May 4.  The X-Men have long been fan favorites, with characters like Wolverine, Storm and Cyclops.

The two groups come into conflict in “Avengers vs. X-Men,” a 12-issue miniseries from Marvel Comics.

The otherworldly Phoenix Force is coming toward earth, seeking the X-Men’s Hope Summers as its host.  The X-Men hope the force may signal the rebirth of the mutant species.  The Avengers, meanwhile, look at the force as potentially deadly to the human race.

X-Men senior editor Nick Lowe and “Wolverine and the X-Men” writer Jason Aaron talked about “Avengers vs. X-Men” in a panel focusing on the X-Men at the recent Planet Comicon.   Lowe said the project is “the biggest thing out this year on the horizon.”

The book will feature five writers and three artists.

“It’s an event unlike any we’ve done at Marvel that I know of, as far as our big giant events,” Lowe said.

Writers on the book include Aaron, Brian Bendis, Jonathan Hickman, Ed Brubaker and Matt Fraction. Artists for the book are John Romita Jr., Olivier Coipel and Adam Kubert.

“Avengers vs. X-Men” No. 0 is on sale now, featuring the prelude to the conflict.  Hope and Scarlet Witch play prominent roles in the zero issue of the book.

“Avengers vs. X-Men” No. 1 will go on sale at special launch parties at more than 1,100 comic shops across the country at 8 p.m. local time on April 3.   Stores were able to choose in advance whether they supported X-Men or Avengers, and will have special variant covers to the first issue available.

Lowe said the conflict is especially tough for certain members of the X-Men.

“One of the crazy things about the X-Men for ‘Avengers vs. X-Men’ is they have to choose what side they are going to be on,” Lowe said.  “Because there are certain X-Men like Wolverine and like Storm, who are part of the Avengers as well.”

A tie-in book, “AVX: Vs.” will take a closer look at individual conflicts in the “Avengers vs. X-Men” battles.

“Each issue has two fights, and each fight is half the book,” Lowe said.  “We pull a fight from the pages of AVX and we expand that fight.”

In the first “Vs.” issue, Aaron writes a battle between Iron Man and Magneto as drawn by Adam Kubert.

“That might sound like it would be a quick fight, guy in a big metal suit versus the master of magnetism,” Aaron said.  “But Tony Stark’s no dummy. He’s going to have a plan in place, he’s going to have a bunch of plans to throw against Magneto.”

“AVX: Vs.” No. 1 goes on sale April 25.

One fan compared the upcoming battle between the X-Men and Avengers to the current political rancor in the United States.

“We always do try to reflect the real world,” Lowe said.  Aaron said this story wouldn’t play out as a simple misunderstanding.

“This is a very different kind of story,” Aaron said.  “This one’s a fight with very real stakes. … two sides with very firm standings, both feel like they’re in the right in what they’re doing. Which makes for an epic fight.”

Stuart Immonen’s AVX VS #1 variant

I enjoy the old-time boxing poster motif, and this Stuart Immonen variant for “AVS Vs.” No. 1 homages that while still making it appear fresh and new.    In the first issue, Iron Man faces Magneto, and Thing takes on Namor.

“That might sound like it would be a quick fight, guy in a big metal suit versus the master of magnetism,” writer Jason Aaron said at Planet Comicon in Overland Park, Kan. “But Tony Stark’s no dummy. He’s going to have a plan in place, he’s going to have a bunch of plans to throw against Magneto.”

“AVX Vs.” No. 1 goes on sale April 25, and is the battle-intensive tie-in to the “Avengers vs. X-Men” series.

Avengers vs X-Men 0 sells out, Marvel reports

“Avengers vs. X-Men” No. 0 has sold out from the publisher in its first day of release, Marvel Comics reports.  The book shows events surrounding the characters Hope Summers and the Scarlet Witch as the conflict between the X-Men and Avengers grows closer.

“Having Avengers VS. X-Men #0 sell out the same day the book goes on sale is phenomenal. The excitement level around this event has been monumental, and now fans can finally experience the story that we’ve been waiting years to tell,” said Marvel Editor In Chief Axel Alonso in a news release. “For years, fans have been clamoring for the return of the Scarlet Witch and we’ve been hounded with questions at conventions asking about Hope’s role in the Marvel Universe …. now they’ll get their answers.”

Copies may still be available at local retailers; the book is immediately going back to press.  The second print of issue 0 is set to go on sale May 2.  “Avengers vs. X-Men” No. 1 will go on sale at early release parties Tuesday night, April 3.
