BAT-FINISHED

The Philippine Daily Inquirer talked with Christian Bale, and he confirmed he was done with Batman.

“I wrapped a few days ago so that will be the last time I’m taking that cowl off,” he said. “I believe that the whole production wrapped yesterday, so it’s all done. Everything’s finished. It’s me and Chris – that will be the end of that Batman era.”

He also praised co-star Anne “Catwoman” Hathaway.

“I had plenty of scenes with Anne,” he said. “And I was there when we did the screen test for her. The thing that I said to Chris [Nolan] that day was that there were many very accomplished actresses who had read for the role. I’m terrible at auditions, so I’m very impressed when somebody really seems to acquire an ownership of a character without having worked on it or prepared for some amount of time.”

THE INCREDIBLE HULK NEARS

Guillermo del Toro tells io9 that the screenplay is in for the possible upcoming “Hulk” TV show, and the team is waiting for a green light. Del Toro, serving as producer, says he and his team know the essential stories, including “Hulk: Grey,” written by Jeph Loeb, who is involved with the show.
“We know all the iterations of the Hulk pretty good. We’ve read all the essential stories, and we’re then riffing on that. There are so many incarnations and ideas. Jeph Loeb — who did a good run [on Hulk: Grey] — is involved, and I love Peter David’s Hulk. But there’s really no part in that mythos that we don’t know, so we are trying put our own personal spin on it.”

Archie #30 (1948): If Betty can sew  a patch onto Archie’s pants, she can take him to the dance.  Did people really do things like this in the 1940s?

Betty and Veronica #192 (Dec. 1971) Veronica ditches the gang, who are cleaning up the river in Riverdale, when she has a chance to appear in a fashion shoot.

Star Wars Legacy vol. 2: Shards: This second volume of “Legacy” does a lot to set up the world of the “Star Wars” universe, 125 years after “Return of the Jedi.”  Cade Skywalker, Luke’s grandson, is the series’ main character, though he’s less active in this volume than the first.   Collects issues 8, 4, 9, 10, 13, 11, and 12 of the series, originally published in 2007.

The Unknown 1-4 and The Unknown Devil Made Flesh 1-4: Two supernatural-style mysteries by writer Mark Waid and artist Minck Oosterveer.  Oosterveer sadly died earlier this year.
In “The Unknown,” from Boom! Studios, master detective Catherine Allingham learns she only has months to live.  She chooses to use that remaining time examining seemingly unsolvable mysteries with her ex-bouncer apprentice, James Doyle.

Sanctuary #1: Stephen Coughlin’s digital comic from SLG features a sanctuary for animals with a dark mystery behind it — it reminded me somewhat of “Lost.”

Batman: No Man’s Land Vol. 1: Batman must deal with Gotham City after a terrible earthquake leads to the evacuation of most of the city.  This volume includes Batman: No Man’s Land #1, Batman #563-564, Batman: Shadow of the Bat #83-84, Detective Comics #730-731 and Batman: Legends of the Dark Knight #116.    While the story is in some ways unbelievable, the storytellers do a good job making this altered Gotham and its residents part of a compelling story of Batman and his allies in a new, difficult circumstance.

MARION COTILLARD, JOSEPH GORDON-LEVITT OFFICIALLY SIGNED FOR “BATMAN 3”

According to MTV’s Splash Page, the long-rumored casting of Marion Cotillard and Joseph Gordon-Levitt in Christopher Nolan’s “The Dark Knight Rises” is finally official.

According to Warner Bros., Cotillard will play Miranda Tate, a Wayne Enterprises board member eager to help a still-grieving Bruce Wayne resume his father’s philanthropic endeavors for Gotham. Gordon-Levitt will play John Blake, a Gotham City beat cop assigned to special duty under the command of Commissioner Gordon.

Marvel announced that after the events of Death of Spider-Man, the storyline taking place in its “Ultimate” line of comics, a new character will take on the role of Spider-Man.
“We called this story Death of Spider-Man for a reason,” said Axel Alonso, Marvel Editor In Chief, in a news release. “This is a huge story that’ll have fans around the world talking for a long time as we set the stage for the debut of our new Spider-Man.”

WONDER WOMAN’S LOOK GETS TWEAKED

The Daily Mail in the UK has several shots of a slightly tweaked Wonder Woman uniform worn by Adrianne Palicki during filming of the “Wonder Woman” TV show.  The very shiny, tight look of the originally released shot has been soften somewhat, and the boots have changed to red.   The pants now also have stars down the side.

JUSTICE LEAGUE FILM PLANNED

Warner Bros. motion picture group president Jeff Robinov is already thinking about DC Comics movies for 2013 and beyond, Hero Complex reports.

Robinov reports his top priority is finally getting the Justice League, DC’s team featuring all its top characters, on the big screen in 2013. Robinov also reports plans to reinvent Batman in some fashion after Christopher Nolan steps down as director following his third Batman film.   The article indicates that Christopher Nolan and Emma Thomas would remain involved as producers of Batman films beyond the third.

Matt Price: Norm, thanks for agreeing to do an interview.  I’ve enjoyed your work for years, and found the first issue of “LIFE WITH ARCHIE” to be a lot of fun!

Norm Breyfogle: Thanks, Matt. I’m enjoying the experience, too!

MP: The Archie wedding series was a monster hit – does that make it more exciting to come on and do the official continuation of the story?

Norm Breyfogle: Certainly! But then, I’d enjoy it, regardless; I just like to draw. Yes, the publicity revolving around the Archie wedding was definitely a good thing for sales, and it looks like that’s rubbing of on our series, too.

MP: How did Archie come to seek you out for this series?

Norm Breyfogle: After meeting Archie President Mike Pellerito at a New York convention in 2009 (or was it 2008?), I’d drawn one of their “New Look” stories and Victor Gorelick (Archie Comics co-president, Editor-in-Chief) afterward asked me if I’d like to do some Archie work in a more traditional drawing style. I was game, but first they requested I draw a few pages of a sample script they provided, which I did. They liked it, so here I am!

MP: You were known for action with your long association with Batman – do you expect Archie to be facing storylines that cause him to become a man of action?

Norm Breyfogle: Haven’t thought much about that. Although I’ve suggested to Archie Comics some springboard ideas (not particularly “action-oriented,” by the way), I’m drawing whatever they want me to draw. I’m really enjoying the writing from Michael Uslan (he wrote a two-year outline and the first two scripts) and Paul Kupperberg (he’s writing all the scripts after the first two, based upon Michael’s outline).

MP: Tell me about bringing your artistic style to the well-known look of the Archie character, and melding both together.

Norm Breyfogle: I was a little worried about how that would work out, since I’d never drawn in such a style before, but once I realized that all that’s really required for a “traditional” Archie drawing style is to follow the formula for the faces and to keep the body proportions at 5-6 heads tall (instead of the 7-9 heads tall used for most all other mainstream adventure stories, especially super-heroes), it came quite naturally to me; I’ve discovered that everything else can be more or less my own established, dramatic drawing style.

MP: You’re drawing two different alternate takes on Archie as a 20-something; as the series progresses, do you anticipate a greater visual distance between Betty’s Archie and Veronica’s?

Norm Breyfogle: I wouldn’t say I’m anticipating that, but I suppose it could happen. Whatever is decided is probably going to be fine with me. It all depends on how much of a change Archie Comics wants to explore, I suppose.

Right now, the biggest changes are happening in the circumstances surrounding Archie, not so much in Archie himself. As a character, I’d say that Archie himself has a pretty stable psychology. He’s got a very strong sense of right and wrong, and I’d think that will keep him more or less on an even keel. It’s one of the main qualities and strengths of the character, and I don’t see that changing.  Lots of other things can change, though,

and already have.

MP: Although you’re the artist of both series, I have to ask – do you have a Betty or Veronica preference?

Maybe because I’m not from a wealthy or privileged background, I favor Betty. She seems to be the one that’s sweeter, easier to get along with.

MP: Is there anything else you’d like to tell me about the series?

Norm Breyfogle: Since I’m not the writer or editor, I should limit my comments to the artwork (I wouldn’t want to give away too much about what’s coming up, story-wise). I really like the higher quality paper, the coloring, and the two-stories-in-one magazine format, all of which gives it all more a prestigious sense than I’d expected back when it was originally planned as two separate, traditionally formatted monthly titles.

And, the two artists who are inking my pencils, Joe Rubinstein and Andrew Pepoy, are wonderful! BTW, I personally requested Rubinstein as an inker because I’ve always liked his inks on my pencils, ever since our collaboration on DC Comics’ title “ANARKY.”

Stan Lee stayed mighty busy in San Diego.  “Stan Lee Comics” was announced in San Diego, a collaboration among A Squared Entertainment (A2), a full-service brand entertainment company; Archie Comics, and Stan Lee, founder of POW! Entertainment.

Stan Lee Comics is based on new Stan Lee creations, and the characters will be published in print and digitally, with plans for live action and animated entertainment, licensing and merchandising.  The first series, “Stan Lee and the Super Seven,” will also debut with an original made-for-video animated motion picture.

Three new superhero franchises from Stan Lee comics will be debuted in 2010.  In “Stan Lee and the Super Seven,” Stan Lee, as a comic book character, befriends seven aliens who find themselves stranded after their spaceship crashes. “Airwalker,” was seen in a recent “Entourage” episode featuring Lee.  The third title will be announced in October.

“For many reasons, Stan Lee Comics is an especially important venture for me,” said POW! Chairman and Founder Stan Lee in a news release.  “With this new line, I have the chance to be intimately involved with the creation of a new world of superheroes and the opportunities are limitless with the Web, TV, film and more. Although the mediums may change, this proves there will always be a place for superheroes in the world of entertainment.”

Of course, Lee created many of today’s best-known superheroes.  With Steve Ditko, he created the Amazing Spider-Man, and with Jack Kirby, he created Iron Man, Thor, the Hulk and the X-Men.

According to the news release, A2 will manage the animated and live programming, as well as the global licensing and merchandising of Stan Lee Comics. Archie Comics will be responsible for the publication of the comics, in both the print and digital formats. Lee will be involved with all creation and creative for Stan Lee Comics.

Among the upcoming projects discussed at Archie Comics’ Friday panel at Comic-Con International in San Diego were the Archie/Tiny  Titans crossover, which will be produced by DC Comics.

Other highlights include:

- Life with Archie, which continues the Archie Marries Betty and Archie Marries Veronica storylines, will be on sale Aug. 10.  In addition to direct market stores, the magazine will be on sale in Walmart and Toys R Us.

- Kevin Keller will make his first appearance in Sept. 1′s Veronica #202, and will also appear in “Veronica” 204 and 205.

- Sabrina, Little Jinx and Katy Keene will relaunch with new series.  Little Jinx will age up from 7 to 13 and be called simply “Jinx.”

- President Obama & Sarah Palin will come to Riverdale to support candidates for President of Riverdale High.

- A new monthly series, “Archie Babies,” featuring the Archie characters as babies, is set for 2011.

- Michael Uslan will reintroduce Pureheart and the Super Teens.

Archie will also continue its program of high-end reprints in partnership with Dark Horse, IDW, and Abrams.

Archie and Friends #146 - "Twilite" part one.

Archie Comics takes a look at the world of Twilight with the parody story “Twilite,” kicking off in “Archie and Friends” #146.

According to Archie’s news release: It’s love at first bite when two new mysterious students arrive in Riverdale. Betty and Veronica are fascinated by the smoldering-hot Ivan, but Jared is warning everyone who will listen that Ivan is really a bloodsucker! Reggie jumps at the chance to help Jared expose Ivan as a vampire, but love… or maybe Ivan… is clouding Betty and Veronica’s vision! Can Archie and the others save the girls from the mysterious Ivan? Is there a greater danger lurking in the darkness?

“Twilite: Part One,” the first of a two-issue storyline that concluded in “Archie and Friends” #147.

“Vampires and the friends and foes of their world surround us every day,” remarks Archie Comics Co-CEO, Jon Goldwater in the news release. “It has been a spectacular treat to bring them to the world of Archie, Betty and Veronica in ‘Twilite.’ I can assure you, Riverdale has never seen a romance quite like this!”

(From that quote, it sounds like Goldwater is saying vampires run around our world every day — but I assume he just means in the worlds of fiction… or does he?)

Archie Comics is introducing its first openly gay character to the town of Riverdale – Kevin Keller will appear in Veronica #202, set for September release.  When Veronica has a crush on the new hunk in town, she can’t figure out why isn’t interested in dating her.

“The introduction of Kevin is just about keeping the world of Archie Comics current and inclusive. Archie’s hometown of Riverdale has always been a safe world for everyone. It just makes sense to have an openly gay character in Archie comic books,” said Archie Comics Co- CEO, Jon Goldwater, in a news release.

Archie Comics on the iPad

At the Chicago Comic & Entertainment Expo (C2E2), comiXology announced a Comics4Kids app for the iPhone, iPad and other mobile devices.   Designed for children 9 and older, the app will feature titles from publishers including Archie Comics and Nicktoons.  Comics4Kids is set to launch by the end of April; Archie Comics are available now via the Comics by comiXology app.
Archie, Sonic the Hedgehog, and, for a limited time, Spongebob Squarepants will join the app.   Nearly 50 comics aimed at kids will be available via the app, as will a retail locator to help parents find more kid-friendly comics in print.

“Comics were a staple of my life growing up. I lived and breathed Archie as a kid, so I know how big of a role these books can play in children’s development. Now, as an adult, I’m doing everything I can to ensure that today’s generation of tech-oriented kids has the same opportunity through comiXology,” said Jon Goldwater, CEO of Archie Comics, in a release.

Comics4Kids is aimed at creating engaging resources to strengthen child development, according to comiXology’s news release.

“Comics have always been read by kids,” said comiXology CEO David Steinberger in the news release. “What we noticed though was the lack of appropriate digital comics made specifically for kids. Since most of the comic apps out there now are 17 and over because of the content they provide, we knew we needed to make an entirely new app for the kids who want to discover and explore comics; an app that parents could feel good about.”

An Archie strip by Henry Scarpelli.

Archie Comics has announced that longtime Archie Comics artist Henry Scarpelli has died at age 79.  Obituary from Archie Comics below:

LONGTIME ARCHIE COMICS ARTIST HENRY SCARPELLI DIES AT 79

It is with deep regret and sorrow that Archie Comics acknowledges the loss of longtime artist, Henry Scarpelli, of Grasmere, Staten Island who passed away on Sunday, April 4 after a long illness. He was 79.

“Henry was an invaluable part of the Archie Comics family,” said Archie Comics Co-President and Editor-in-Chief, Victor Gorelick. “He will truly be missed.”

Scarpelli studied at the School of Visual Arts in Manhattan where he honed his pencil and inking skills. He would go on to pencil and/or ink several comic strips and comic book features over the years and even wrote a few as well.

Scarpelli’s first professional comic book work was a back-up feature for one of DC’s funny animal titles of the late 1940s. In the 1950s, he joined a newspaper syndicate as assistant artist on the “Little Sport” strip and soon had a cartoon panel of his own, “TV Tee Hees.” This single panel gag strip built around the inner workings of TV broadcasting proved so popular that it ran in 150 newspapers from 1956 to 1975.

“The TV Tee Hees” strip led to TV comic books when Scarpelli ended up at Dell working on several comic books based on 1960s TV shows. Scarpelli was adept at capturing the features of the popular TV stars of the day, and among the programs he adapted to comics were “The Beverly Hillbillies,” “Bewitched,” “Get Smart,” “Hogan’s Heroes” and “McHale’s Navy.”

Scarpelli’s Dell work led to assignments from several publishers including Marvel, DC, Charlton and Archie. While he inked and occasionally penciled both superhero and romance comics, the majority of Scarpelli’s output consisted of depicting humorous characters. He continued to work on comic books based on real life personalities like Jerry Lewis and Abbott & Costello. Henry also had opportunities to work on some of the ground-breaking DC humor titles like “Angel & the Ape” and “Stanley & His Monster.”

Ultimately, Scarpelli found himself getting more and more work in the genre that would define his career, teenage humor comics. Scarpelli’s most notable contributions in this area included “Millie the Model” for Marvel; “Date with Debbi,” “Leave it to Binky,” “Swing with Scooter” for DC Comics; and Charlton’s “Sinistro, Boy Fiend” – a humorous teenage super-villain.

All of these titles were stepping stones for what would become Henry’s crowning achievement, to become one of Archie Comics’ lead artists. Henry penciled and inked for most of the Archie Comics titles. Among Scarpelli’s more notable accomplishments for Archie, and one he was very proud of, was drawing the daily and Sunday Archie newspaper strip for over fifteen years.

Those who knew Henry Scarpelli personally, will no doubt remember his good humor and how much he loved to laugh. “It’s no wonder his first published work was a strip titled, ‘Henry the Laughing Hyena,’” said Paul Castiglia, an Archie Comics historian who wrote a few stories drawn by Scarpelli.

Scarpelli is survived by his wife Claire, son Glenn Scarpelli, sisters Rose, Louise and Maryann; brothers Louis, George and Ralph; and many cherished nieces, nephews and cousins.

Life With Archie - The Married Life

Archie Comics is bringing Betty and Veronica together.   The two announced comic-book series “Archie Loves Betty” and “Archie Loves Veronica” are being brought together in on magazine titled “Life With Archie – The Married Life.”

Archie Comics says in a release that the more mainstream magazine format will allow wider distribution of the storylines.

Each story will cover a possible future of Archie: One in which he’s married to the socialite Veronica, and the other in which he marries girl-next-door Betty.

“The feedback from the press release announcing ‘Archie Loves Betty’ and ‘Archie Loves Veronica’ was so spectacular we were immediately charged with the task of finding a way to make sure everyone would be able to get to it,” said Archie Co-CEO, Jon Goldwater, in a news release. “A magazine can be found anywhere!”

“Life With Archie” is scheduled to be available August 2010. Cover price will be $3.99 US and $4.49 CAN.

George Perez, John Romita and others join with Archie Comics and the Hero Initiative for a new fundraising effort: “Archie Covers: Fifty Times an American Icon.”

An auction featuring 50 new Archie covers by 50 great artists will benefit Hero Initiative, with plans for a book including the covers to come.

The Hero Initiative is the charity dedicated to helping comic creators in medical or financial need.

Archie Comics has printed 50 blank-covered copies of the landmark issue “Archie” #600, and Hero will have 50 stellar artists do original Archie covers on the special edition books.

The originals will be auctioned off at a later date to benefit the Hero Initiative, and a book will be published, collecting all 50 covers.

Artists including Neal Adams, Darwyn Cooke, Sam Kieth, Jerry Ordway, George Pérez, John Romita and Tim Sale are slated to contribute.

“Hey, Archie Comics is one of the very few companies I’ve never worked for and any opportunity to draw the lovely Betty and Veronica is one I can’t possibly pass up, especially as it also benefits the Hero Initiative,” said Perez, a Hero Initiative board member, in a release. “And, considering my reputation as a super-team artist, how could I resist drawing the Riverdale gang in their superhero persona?”

Archie Comics co-CEO Jon Goldwater shared his excitement about working with the Hero Initiative.

“Archie Comics is committed to supporting those who have spent their lives as the cornerstone of the comics industry. We are thrilled to be working with the Hero Initiative on this project,” said Jon Goldwater in a news release. “The covers have been remarkable and we can’t wait to see what the remaining artists have in store for their edition of the Hero covers for Archie #600.”

Spinning out of the two possible futures revealed in the pages of Archie Comics last year, Archie has revealed two new comic book series.   This July, Archie Comics will launch  The Married Life: Archie Loves Betty and The Married Life: Archie Loves Veronica. Each title is an entirely new ongoing series.

Each title will cover the events of Archie as an adult; in one comic series, married to the rich socialite Veronica Lodge; in the other, married to the friendly girl next door, Betty Cooper.

“Everything about The Married Life series for both titles has exceeded our exceptionally high expectations,” said Archie Comics Co-CEO, Jon Goldwater, in a news release. “The new direction of Archie Comics will be defined with the introduction of these two new titles, ‘Archie Loves Betty’ and ‘Archie Loves Veronica,’ and we couldn’t be more thrilled.”

Given the huge increase in direct-market sales seen by “Archie” No. 600 and the subsequent “marriage” issues, it seems like a good move for Archie to keep those fans interested.

Looks like Archie’s trying to keep the hits coming.  After massive sales on the “Archie Gets Married” storyline, Archie Comics looks like it’s reaching out to Hollywood.

Archie Comics announced today that Robot Chicken writer/producer Tom Root would write the 200th issue of “Jughead.”  Jughead is Archie’s snack-loving best friend.

“The Archie Comics characters are comedy icons,” said Root in a release. “Each character’s personality has been so well-defined over the course of nearly 70 years that it was a lot of fun to shake them up and present them with new challenges. Mostly, though, I just wanted to write a funny issue. I hope Archie fans like it!”

In the story “Something Ventured, Something Gained,” Jughead trades his body’s metabolism to a witch in exchange for an irresistible mega cheeseburger, according to Archie Comics’ news release.

“Tom Root infuses his scripts with wild humor and great storytelling that perfectly fits Jughead,” said Archie Comics CEO Jon Goldwater in a release.

Archie Comics will also create its first ever variant cover for “Jughead” 200; the variant cover will be drawn by Rex Lindsey.

“Jughead” 200 retails for $2.50 and will be available March 17.

Last month, when Archie married Veronica in “Archie” comics No. 601, Oklahomans reacted, many with fervor, to the announcement.

Jeff Cook of Seminole e-mailed: “I’m 59 years old and read Archie’s comics for years and years. There is no way Archie should marry the self-absorbed Veronica. Reggie and Veronica are made for each other, and Archie and Betty are soul mates. Betty is far from the dumb blond, she is wife material; Veronica is more Paris Hilton.”

Cook and the other Oklahomans who wrote in favor of Betty will get their wish. In “Archie” No. 603, set for release in November, Archie proposes to Betty, The New York Times reported.

Wait, does this make Archie a two-timing lout? Surely bigamy is illegal in Riverdale.

It’s all part of the plan. According to the Times, writer Michael Uslan was inspired by the film “Sliding Doors,” the song “Both Sides Now” and Robert Frost’s poem “The Road Not Taken” to explore two possible futures for the Riverdale teens.

In issue No. 600, Archie took a stroll on Memory Lane to the future. This is a story setup usually used to go back into the past, to relive stories of Little Archie. This time, Archie walked the other direction and came to a fork in the road. He walked ahead into the future in which he married Veronica, had twins and worked for her father.

In issue No. 602, set for release Oct 21, Archie will go for a stroll and again encounter that fork in the road, allowing him to explore another possible future.

“The classic Archie-Betty-Veronica love triangle is representative of the question of what will bring us joy in life: fiscal security or someone who is actually nice to us,” said Rob Vollmar, a comic-book writer and retailer.

“It does have sort of an existential core to it, where a man is able to explore his possible future. Personally, I’ve been pulling for Betty the whole time.”

In last month’s “Archie” No. 600, perpetual comic-book teenager Archie Andrews jumped into the future and proposed marriage to ritzy Veronica Lodge.

Veronica, half of the “Betty and Veronica” duo that have long-competed for Archie’s heart, appears to have won the round, as “Archie” No. 601, on sale Sept. 16, features “Archie Marries Veronica Part 2: The Wedding.”

“This is the unforgettable epic that hurtles readers into Archie’s future – and it’s a future where Riverdale’s favorite rich girl wins his hand in marriage!” states an Archie Comics news release.

The story is written by Michael Uslan (the producer of the 1989 “Batman” film) and drawn by Stan Goldberg.

Are Archie fans disappointed that blond Betty Cooper, the stable, helpful girl next door is being set aside for Veronica? Many are. As reported by The Associated Press, comic book store owner Dave Luebke protested the decision by selling his copy of the rare “Archie” No. 1.

Luebke’s “Archie Comics” No. 1 sold for $38,837 from Dallas’ Heritage Auction Galleries, which may have softened the sting.

One “Archie” artist, Dan Parent, was sketching “Archie marries Betty” drawings for fans in San Diego who were upset by the choice of Veronica, as well.

So, is this it for Archie’s single days? Archie Comics is playing it close to the vest, but solicitation info from the company for November’s “Archie Comics” No. 603 indicates Archie’s future may not be absolute.

“Life has taken some amazing turns for Archie and his friends lately,” the release says. “What path will Archie follow next? One thing is certain: Should he choose to venture back down memory lane, anything can happen!”

Kevin Eastman signs during Preview Night at Comic-Con International

SAN DIEGO — I didn’t schedule anything major for tonight, so I could wander the floor and check in with people.   While traffic is lighter than it’ll be during the full days, it still felt pretty full once the show got in full swing.

Among things seen at Preview Night:

* Saw Mark Waid signing at Boom! Studios and thanked him for giving me an interview back in the mid-1990s when I was starting my own comics zine.   He was friendly and gracious about it.   I encourage everybody to check out his Irredeemable, which is a dark and intense comic.

* Saw Alex Ross artwork that costs more than my car.  By quite a bit, actually.

* Saw some Heritage auctions items that also were quite pricey – a 9.8 Incredible Hulk 181 had an estimate of $17,000.

* Lots of new toys in the Mattel booth – Captain Marvel has a figure upcoming in the “Brave and Bold” line, so I hope that means we’ll see him on the show.

* Got a “Nexus Army” T-shirt from the Rude Dude booth.  They were going fast, according to Rude Dude’s Jaynelle Rude, so if you want one, get over there quick!

* Also purchased a new “Scott Pilgrim” shirt from the Oni booth – really getting excited for that movie, and of course the comic remains among my favorites.

* Kevin Eastman was drawing a large line with his new “TMNT” book – congrats on the 25th anniversary of that indie hit!

* Dan Parent, “Archie” writer/artist, was doing a commission of Archie marrying Betty – giving the Betty fans some retailiation for the upcoming Archie/Veronica wedding, it seems!

“Batman” movie executive producer Michael E. Uslan will come to Comic-Con this year for the 20th anniversary of the Tim Burton film that changed how comic books are brought to movie screens.

Uslan will also be on hand to talk about his highly anticipated upcoming storyline for Archie Comics, in which Archie marries Veronica.

Uslan has several new properties in development, including Shazam! and The Shadow.

In news that’s sure to further shock “Archie” fans, Archie Comics has released the cover of “Archie” #601 – which features Archie marrying Veronica. The comic, written by superhero movie producer Michael Uslan, is set to ship in September. It’s set in the future of the “Archie” characters, after graduating college.
