Last month, when Archie married Veronica in “Archie” comics No. 601, Oklahomans reacted, many with fervor, to the announcement.

Jeff Cook of Seminole e-mailed: “I’m 59 years old and read Archie’s comics for years and years. There is no way Archie should marry the self-absorbed Veronica. Reggie and Veronica are made for each other, and Archie and Betty are soul mates. Betty is far from the dumb blond, she is wife material; Veronica is more Paris Hilton.”

Cook and the other Oklahomans who wrote in favor of Betty will get their wish. In “Archie” No. 603, set for release in November, Archie proposes to Betty, The New York Times reported.

Wait, does this make Archie a two-timing lout? Surely bigamy is illegal in Riverdale.

It’s all part of the plan. According to the Times, writer Michael Uslan was inspired by the film “Sliding Doors,” the song “Both Sides Now” and Robert Frost’s poem “The Road Not Taken” to explore two possible futures for the Riverdale teens.

In issue No. 600, Archie took a stroll on Memory Lane to the future. This is a story setup usually used to go back into the past, to relive stories of Little Archie. This time, Archie walked the other direction and came to a fork in the road. He walked ahead into the future in which he married Veronica, had twins and worked for her father.

In issue No. 602, set for release Oct 21, Archie will go for a stroll and again encounter that fork in the road, allowing him to explore another possible future.

“The classic Archie-Betty-Veronica love triangle is representative of the question of what will bring us joy in life: fiscal security or someone who is actually nice to us,” said Rob Vollmar, a comic-book writer and retailer.

“It does have sort of an existential core to it, where a man is able to explore his possible future. Personally, I’ve been pulling for Betty the whole time.”

In last month’s “Archie” No. 600, perpetual comic-book teenager Archie Andrews jumped into the future and proposed marriage to ritzy Veronica Lodge.

Veronica, half of the “Betty and Veronica” duo that have long-competed for Archie’s heart, appears to have won the round, as “Archie” No. 601, on sale Sept. 16, features “Archie Marries Veronica Part 2: The Wedding.”

“This is the unforgettable epic that hurtles readers into Archie’s future – and it’s a future where Riverdale’s favorite rich girl wins his hand in marriage!” states an Archie Comics news release.

The story is written by Michael Uslan (the producer of the 1989 “Batman” film) and drawn by Stan Goldberg.

Are Archie fans disappointed that blond Betty Cooper, the stable, helpful girl next door is being set aside for Veronica? Many are. As reported by The Associated Press, comic book store owner Dave Luebke protested the decision by selling his copy of the rare “Archie” No. 1.

Luebke’s “Archie Comics” No. 1 sold for $38,837 from Dallas’ Heritage Auction Galleries, which may have softened the sting.

One “Archie” artist, Dan Parent, was sketching “Archie marries Betty” drawings for fans in San Diego who were upset by the choice of Veronica, as well.

So, is this it for Archie’s single days? Archie Comics is playing it close to the vest, but solicitation info from the company for November’s “Archie Comics” No. 603 indicates Archie’s future may not be absolute.

“Life has taken some amazing turns for Archie and his friends lately,” the release says. “What path will Archie follow next? One thing is certain: Should he choose to venture back down memory lane, anything can happen!”

Kevin Eastman signs during Preview Night at Comic-Con International

SAN DIEGO — I didn’t schedule anything major for tonight, so I could wander the floor and check in with people.   While traffic is lighter than it’ll be during the full days, it still felt pretty full once the show got in full swing.

Among things seen at Preview Night:

* Saw Mark Waid signing at Boom! Studios and thanked him for giving me an interview back in the mid-1990s when I was starting my own comics zine.   He was friendly and gracious about it.   I encourage everybody to check out his Irredeemable, which is a dark and intense comic.

* Saw Alex Ross artwork that costs more than my car.  By quite a bit, actually.

* Saw some Heritage auctions items that also were quite pricey – a 9.8 Incredible Hulk 181 had an estimate of $17,000.

* Lots of new toys in the Mattel booth – Captain Marvel has a figure upcoming in the “Brave and Bold” line, so I hope that means we’ll see him on the show.

* Got a “Nexus Army” T-shirt from the Rude Dude booth.  They were going fast, according to Rude Dude’s Jaynelle Rude, so if you want one, get over there quick!

* Also purchased a new “Scott Pilgrim” shirt from the Oni booth – really getting excited for that movie, and of course the comic remains among my favorites.

* Kevin Eastman was drawing a large line with his new “TMNT” book – congrats on the 25th anniversary of that indie hit!

* Dan Parent, “Archie” writer/artist, was doing a commission of Archie marrying Betty – giving the Betty fans some retailiation for the upcoming Archie/Veronica wedding, it seems!

“Batman” movie executive producer Michael E. Uslan will come to Comic-Con this year for the 20th anniversary of the Tim Burton film that changed how comic books are brought to movie screens.

Uslan will also be on hand to talk about his highly anticipated upcoming storyline for Archie Comics, in which Archie marries Veronica.

Uslan has several new properties in development, including Shazam! and The Shadow.

In news that’s sure to further shock “Archie” fans, Archie Comics has released the cover of “Archie” #601 – which features Archie marrying Veronica. The comic, written by superhero movie producer Michael Uslan, is set to ship in September. It’s set in the future of the “Archie” characters, after graduating college.

I forgot to post this one yesterday — here’s a look at the new logo for the “Veronica” series.  It’s similar to the “Betty” logo, but feels a little more upscale (that could be my imagination).  My first thought on this one is that the logo works for the character, and I don’t think in this case there’s any preconceived notion of a previous logo that’s going to really stick in most people’s heads.

Archie Comics has unveiled a new logo that will appear on all of its comic books, digest/double digests and graphic novels. The new Archie Comics’ logo will make its first appearance on the Archie Comic publications scheduled for the newsstand on-sale starting the week of September 15, 2008. The first two titles will be Veronica #190 and Archie Digest #247.

The trade dress includes new logos for the titles as well as logos for characters including Little Archie, Cheryl Blossom, Reggie and Josie and the Pussycats.

It seems like Archie’s been using this rounded logo forever – since at least this 1960 cover:

It looks like “Little Archie” on the digest cover is retaining the classic rounded “Archie” logo, while the current “Archie” gets the more blocky new lettering.  Of course, the classic “Archie” logo is also maintained on the “The Archie Library” swoop on the left-hand side.

Another example of the new Archie Digest logo, here on the Christmas issue.  Pretty sure Archie has used that Christmas lettering before.

I think I like the “Archie” used on the Double Digest better than I like the “Archie” they’re using on the regular digest.  Not sure about that “Double Digest” underneath it — it’s got kind of a 1950’s diner feel to it, but I’m not sure how much it ties in with the Archie logo they’ve got on it. I definitely don’t like the “’s” tacked on in a whole other font.

I think the new Betty and Veronica logo is supposed to be a mix of modern and classic, with the cursive B and V and the slanted rest of the names.  The Betty and Veronica logo has undergone more changes than the Archie logo throughout its history, though I believe they’ve all had the bubble-type lettering, just slanted and outlined in different ways.  I do think I like the faces up there.

This digest also has the logos for Sabrina and Josie and the Pussycats — these both look to me to be similar to the classic logos for those characters.

Here’s what Betty’s new logo looks like on her own book.  It’s different, but I again like the face in the logo, and the cursive style writing isn’t a bad fit for the character. The B might be a little thick for my idea of a teenage girl, but they might have wanted to stay away from anything that suggested the Barbie B.

Here again, the double digest version gets branded differently. I wouldn’t have thought about drawing distinction between the logo in the digest and double digest form, but it looks like that’s something the Archie folks have decided is worth trying.  I believe Cheryl Blossom’s logo shown here is similar to her classic one. Katy Keene’s has been changed from her formerly all-caps version.

Jughead’s logo seems more typically “his” than the rounded, Archie-style one he had before, bringing in his beanie and his picture. Still don’t like the tacked-on “s.”

The e-mail doesn’t show if the Jughead’s single digest has a different logo (though I don’t even remember for sure if there’s a non-double Jughead digest).  Also, it doesn’t show if the main “Archie” book is changing from its classic logo.  My non-professional opinion would be it’s an attempt at modernization, with mixed results.  Anybody with more professional logo experience want to weigh in?

Katy Keene is returning this August in a new graphic novel from Archie Comics.   Created by cartoonist Bill Woggon in 1945, Katy Keene was a model and pinup. Perhaps her greatest claim to fame was wearing outfits designed by the readers of her comics.   More info on Katy’s history is available at Scoop.

Archie brought back the character in its 2005 “Free Comic Book Day” comic, and she has since appeared in “Archie and Friends.”

Writer-artist Andrew Pepoy has handled Katy’s modern adventures, in which she’s a model, movie actress, and pop singer.  The graphic novel will collect the Katy Keene stories from “Archie & Friends” Nos. 101-110, along with a new story. 

Also starring (sort of) in “Katy Keene” is former “Mighty Hero,” the Web, from Archie’s superhero line.  Katy is starring in “The Web Returns,” and even attends a comic convention to promote the film.

The 112-page, full color graphic novel retails for $10.95 and ships to comic-book shops on August 20.

After the success of last year’s new look for Betty and Veronica, Archie Comics has decided to give a makeover to the beanie-wearing, hamburger-loving Jughead.

Last year, one of the most talked about stories in the comic book industry was the Dynamic New Look for Betty & Veronica; as seen in the story “Bad Boy Trouble”. Thousands of Archie fans responded by e-mail, snail mail and phone expressing their disapproval of the new look before the story was even printed. Those same fans, after reading “Bad Boy Trouble” let us know how much they enjoyed the story once seeing it in print. They thought it was fun and interesting to see the characters with a different look, AS LONG AS IT WASN’T IN ALL OF THE COMICS. The story was so popular it was collected into a Graphic Novel.
Thanks to the response of those thousands of fans, we have created another story with a Dynamic New Look. This time, starring Jughead in a story that will shock you. You can see Jughead’s Dynamic New Look in four consecutive issues of Jughead’s Double Digest starting with issue #139 through issue #142, with Dynamic art by the legendary Joe Staton. Remember, it is only one of the stories in Jughead’s Double Digest, the remaining stories will be in the classic Archie art style you know and love.
