“Flash” #6 variant cover by Mike Choi revealed

DC Comics’ Source blog has revealed Mike Choi’s variant cover for “The Flash” #6, on sale Feb. 22.

“’The Flash’ is one of my favorite books right now, so it was a real pleasure and honor to get the chance to work on a cover for the title,” Choi told The Source. “I’m good friends with both [series writers and artists] Francis Manapul and Brian Buccellato, whom I’ve known pretty much my entire career, my first professional gig being the follow-up to Francis’ run on WITCHBLADE for Top Cow, with Brian being my colorist on the book, so of course this was a title I was definitely rooting for. Hopefully I’ve done just a little bit to add something to their book and its run.”

As hinted at in this variant cover to issue #6, Captain Cold returns in issue #7 of “The Flash.”

University of Oklahoma professor Jeremy Short will speak on textbooks he’s created in graphic novel format at Friday’s TEDxOU conference at the University of Oklahoma in Norman.

“I’m speaking on the ‘graphic’ approach to education that I’ve developed by writing several graphic novels on management, entrepreneurship and college survival,” Short said. “Most recently, I co-authored a free online textbook that incorporates a graphic-intensive approach to teaching key concepts in my primary area of study: strategic management.”

Miranda Kerr as Wonder Woman (pictures, video)

Supermodel Miranda Kerr dressed up as Wonder Woman for a recent photo shoot for Australia’s Grazia magazine.

She posed with the Australian flag in a Wonder Woman suit designed by fashion designer Alex Perry.

Check out the video below; at a certain point she loses the costume and appears to be nude except for the Australian flag:

Grazia fashion director Thelma McQuillan defended the magazine taking the risk of filming a near-naked Miranda Kerr in an Australian flag, and wearing the costume of an American icon.

“We’re a fashion magazine – and this is art,” says Thelma. “We’re taking a risk – because Wonder Woman is a globally recognised icon and not just anyone could pull it off. But Miranda is an Australian icon herself. She’s the star who, time and time again, our readers say they most admire; a businesswoman, a wife, a mum. She is our wonder woman. And she has the presence to pull this recreation off.”

“Duel to the Death” comic art event in Norman on Saturday

Meet some local comic-book creators and vote on your favorite “death” in a local arts event hosted by Speeding Bullet Comics, 614 N Porter Ave. in Norman.

From the Speeding Bullet newsletter:

We’re issuing the ultimate challenge to Oklahoma comic creators … we’ll give you 20 minutes. Kill off a character right before our very eyes!

Artists will be completing a 4-panel story live at Speeding Bullet, starting at 5 p.m. this Saturday.

Official Death Rules: Artists will have 20 minutes to sketch, pencil, color (whatever they wish to do!) a 4-panel story in our store. They must kill off a character (original or otherwise) in the strip. Artists may enter the contest with concepts or thumbnails, but all art included in the final product must be completed during the 20-minute competition. Artists will bring their own paper and supplies. The winner of our duel will be determined based on stunning use of creativity, humor, and artistic talent under pressure. Tragic irony is also a plus!

After the Duel, fans will be able to get comics signed and talk to these local creators about their upcoming work.

For more information, see the facebook event page here.

I’ll be attending the event as well, so stop by and say hello. (Full disclosure note – I am one of the owners of Speeding Bullet Comics.) I look forward to seeing what kinds of awesome comics are created!

Transformers Prime: Darkness Rising DVD review

The five-part miniseries that preceded the “Transformers Prime” computer-animated series is edited together and collected on the DVD “Transformers Prime: Darkness Rising.” Less clanky than the feature films but more mature than the original 1980s cartoons, “Darkness Rising” is a hybrid that should appeal to both younger and older, nostalgic fans.

Monday movie quote challenge #164

“Now you listen to me, I’m an advertising man, not a red herring. I’ve got a job, a secretary, a mother, two ex-wives and several bartenders that depend upon me, and I don’t intend to disappoint them all by getting myself ‘slightly’ killed.”

“The Artist” movie review

A love letter to silent cinema, “The Artist” features the career of a Douglas Fairbanks-esque movie star and the effect the introduction of sound has on his career. In a gimmicky but brilliant move, the black-and-white film is itself a silent movie.
