Superman leads a huge new release week; 24-Hour Comics Day is Saturday; Brad Meltzer interview
Kyle’s latest video has NES flair; 24-Hour Comics Day pushes artists to their limits; Brad Meltzer’s Decoded to start season 2; and it’s the largest release week of comics in more than a decade in this week’s Planet 46 Comics Podcast.
The 8th annual 24-Hour Comics Day is Saturday, Oct. 1
The eighth annual 24-Hour Comics Day is Saturday, and the comic book specialty retailer group ComicsPRO is again organizing the event.
24-Hour Comics Day is an annual challenge for cartoonists to produce a 24-page comic book written, drawn and completed in 24 consecutive hours. Comic book artists, whether professional or amateur, young or old, are invited to check out a local venue or try the challenge on their own.
National Coffee Day is today!
How did I miss that today is National Coffee Day? Go pick up some of Shannon Wheeler’s “Too Much Coffee Man” to celebrate – now available in an omnibus edition from Dark Horse.
Shannon Wheeler is a longtime favorite of mine, and his work is always hilarious. His recent collection from Boom!, “I Thought You Would Be Funnier,” won an Eisner award, and his latest, “Grandpa Won’t Wake Up,” debuts at this weekend’s APE (Alternative Press Expo).
Meanwhile, here are some coffee facts from Eight O’Clock Coffee:
76% of Americans drink coffee and 58% drink it on a daily basis (over 3 cups per coffee drinker). What’s the best way to celebrate National Coffee Day on September 29? Eight O’Clock Coffee says, take a break from your barista and brew it yourself! America’s original bagged coffee offers three quick tips to make a great cup of coffee – and save time, gas and money while doing it.
1. Start with great coffee – it’s the single most important step.
2. Use a clean machine. The average coffee drinker should clean their coffee-making equipment (brewer, grinder) once a month.
3. Be creative. Test out different coffee forms, coffee blends and flavor enhancers – be your own brewista.
To encourage the brew-it-yourself movement, Eight O’Clock Coffee is celebrating National Coffee Day by giving away a year’s supply of coffee to 8 lucky fans on their Facebook page. (www.facebook.com/eightoclockcoffee)

Superman #1, Aquaman #1 among this week’s releases from DC Comics’ The New 52
Superman gets a new No. 1 as George Perez sets up the Daily Planet as a news organization that’s now a branch of a larger multimedia corporation. For possibly obvious reasons, I love the Daily Planet part of the Superman mythos, and I’d love to see Perez dig into modern journalism. Aquaman #1 is also a treat, as Geoff Johns puts the potential questions of the readership in the mouth of a semi-obnoxious blogger who questions the King of the Seas.
Here’s the list of releases that are part of DC Comics’ The New 52 hitting shelves today:
# ALL-STAR WESTERN #1
# AQUAMAN #1
# BATMAN: THE DARK KNIGHT #1
# BLACKHAWKS #1
# THE FLASH #1
# THE FURY OF FIRESTORM: THE NUCLEAR MEN #1
# GREEN LANTERN: NEW GUARDIANS #1
# I, VAMPIRE #1
# JUSTICE LEAGUE DARK #1
# THE SAVAGE HAWKMAN #1
# SUPERMAN #1
# TEEN TITANS #1

Batman #1 and other DC Comics’ The New 52 week 4 reviews, plus New Teen Titans: Games
The fourth week of “The New 52″ was fairly Bat-centric for most of the titles. “Batman” and “Nightwing” both re-established their core characters. There was also more sexual content in this week’s books, leading to lots of discussion online and in comic shops about gender relations and the portrayal of women in the DC Universe.
