DC Comics to relaunch line; Geoff Johns, Jim Lee to create Justice League
As USA Today and the DC Comics Source blog are reporting, the publisher is relaunching its entire line starting in August, with 52 No. 1 issues across the line.
This relaunch will start with a new “Justice League” No. 1 on Aug. 31, and all DC’s superhero titles will be offered digitally on the same day from there forward.
“What’s the human aspect behind all these costumes? That’s what I wanted to explore,” Geoff Johns told USA Today. He’ll write Justice League, to be drawn by Jim Lee.
Another 51 No. 1 issues will ship in September.
“We really want to inject new life in our characters and line,” Dan DiDio, co-publisher of DC with Lee, told USA Today. ”This was a chance to start, not at the beginning, but at a point where our characters are younger and the stories are being told for today’s audience.”
More about the changes to come at USA Today.

Grace Park: Nerdage’s #11 actress with geek appeal
Coming in at No. 11 on Nerdage’s list of actresses with geek appeal is former “Battlestar Galactica” star Grace Park. Park now stars on “Hawaii Five-O” as Kono Kalakaua, part of Steve McGarrett’s team.
Park recently talked to Hawaii News Now about the first season of the show.
“(Kono) wasn’t even out of the academy in the beginning, and she right away was in the mix of some pretty grisly cases,” Park told HNN.
“Hawaii Five-O” was recently renewed for a second season.
After “Battlestar Galactica,” Park guest-starred in season one of “Human Target” and appeared on 12 episodes of “The Border.”

2,011 in 2011 comic book reading challenge: Week 20 and 21 recap
A big chunk of the recent comics challenge reading was focused on 1970s Captain America issues. I remember picking up issue #150, shown above, at a flea market probably about 20 years ago. At the time, it was one of the earliest issues of the series that I owned. (I’ve acquired more since then…) Anyway, it was a relatively productive reading period this time around, with 73 comics read. With 713 comics read total, I’m 35 percent of the way to 2,011 comics read, with 41 percent of the year over. Breakdowns after the cut.

Marvels Project, Mystique come to trade; Rocketeer, Alpha Flight back in comic-book miniseries
Ed Brubaker and Steve Epting tie together a lot of Marvel’s Golden Age characters in a compelling story. It’s reminiscent of books like Kurt Busiek and Alex Ross’ “Marvels” or James Robinson’s “Golden Age.” And given how much I like those books, it’s no surprise I think this one belongs on your bookshelf. While this is exactly the sort of thing I like — right down to the Steve McNiven Captain America and Bucky cover — this has appeal beyond just hardcore comics history buffs.

Superman’s fight against the KKK and more examined in “War, Politics and Superheroes”
What’s Superman’s stance on the death penalty? Who might Spider-Man vote for? Marc DiPaolo, assistant professor of English and film at Oklahoma City University, has examined the political leanings, often subtextual, of comic-book superheroes.
“War, Politics, and Superheroes: Ethics and Propaganda in Comics and Film” was released by McFarland and Co. last month.
David Tennant: Nerdage’s #12 actor with geek appeal
He’s stepped down as the Doctor, but former “Doctor Who” star David Tennant remains popular at Nerdage, coming in at No. 12 on the list of actors with geek appeal.
He voiced Spitelout in the 2010 hit “How to Train Your Dragon” and appeared in the UK miniseries “Single Father.” He’s set to star in August’s remake of “Fright Night” and provide his voice to the upcoming Aardman stop-motion animation “The Pirates!”
He’ll team up again with former “Doctor Who” co-star Catherine Tate in “Much Ado About Nothing,” which opens next week at London’s Wyndham’s Theatre.
