Christians have a right to be offended by this movie, what happened to free speech? I really wish there would have been a warning on the BOX of the movie that it was offensive to Christians. I am commenting on any reviews that I can find to make sure it is known, to prevent other Christians from wasting their money on it as well. Sure, you can walk out, or stop the movie, but the money you paid for it is GONE forever! As a side note, if it were Muslims being mocked as a few mentioned, the creators of the movie would have most likely received death threats, just like what happened with South Park, when they attempted to do so! Nerdblog, I appreciate your fair and balanced comments.

Yes, my husband and I are Christians and we knew that the movie was rated “R”. However, the rating was for sexual remarks and profanity. No warning whatsoever about the God Bashing! I wanted to believe that it was going to change and in the end something profound would happen to show them that their disbelief was wrong. Saddly that didn’t happen. I won’t be recommending this movie to anyone.

Exactly right, Daniel.

I don’t hear Christians complaining when someone else is getting belittled. Maybe you should have a sense of humor when it is your turn? We can’t ALWAYS leave you out, you’re so ripe for this type of humor.

The movie was fun. Not as good as some of the other films they’ve done, but since they’re playing to Americans this time around, they had to make it dumber and add in fart jokes. Sad but true. I love Simon and Nick and will back them on ANYTHING.

I see plenty of negative muslim stereotypes in american movies, its not treated as such a big deal. If Christians can’t take critism or being poked fun at then maybe they should just go live in their own magical little christians-only world where no other belief systems exist.

If this movie offends hardcore christians, don’t make a hoopla about it, just don’t watch it. The bible offends athiests so I don’t read it, its simple

Again, thanks for the discussion. I’m going to remove anything with name-calling or blatant racism.

Just to recap, here’s what I’ve got so far:

1. My review includes that the creators of “Paul” are very talented, but this film didn’t work as well as it could have. Among its shortcomings were characters that are not fully developed, or that seem stereotypical.

2. Some Christians are offended in how characters calling themselves Christian in the film were portrayed. They certainly have the right to be offended, and to discuss why they were offended.

3. Other people were not offended, and found the film funny. This is also within their rights.

4. I assume there are also some people who found the film funny, but were offended; and who weren’t offended, but didn’t find the film funny. Those people aren’t really commenting on this article so far, though.

This film is bigoted anti-Christian garbage.

Anyone that hates bigotry or racism should boycott this film any future films that anyone associated with it do.

Mel Gibson lost his reputation for being a religious bigot and this movie is just as bad.

What a funny funny movie….. British comics know just what to say to “take the piss out” of things. The whole concept was brilliant!. I am still laughing at the jokes days later! Kristen Wiig was so funny! and did a great job… I think Simon Pegg and Nick Frost could have tightened up the ideas better… it seemed like a very long comedy sketch at times… but over all it was very funny!

I find it funny that “Christians” are so easily offended by a movie! It is entertainment!!! You paid to see the movie, you were not forced to watch some anti-god propaganda. Grown up! You want the freedom to believe what you want, but (just like in history) if you don’t live the way a “Christian” live you are wrong, an atheist or pagan!

Thanks for the comments so far, it’d be great if we could keep it civil.

I think people have every right to discuss what they thought worked and didn’t work in the movie. And I do think if the “Christian” characters in the film had been portrayed as any other religion, people would be making comments about the portrayal being stereotypical or lacking depth. So I think it’s a fair criticism.

Katy i would love to have a conversation with you and whoever else about what can be done about this movie. I and my wife do a student ran radio show through KSU in Kent Ohio called Not Too Far Gone Radio and as soon as we left the theatre at 10:30 today we were having the same thoughts that this should be addressed. I just actually sent a email to all of our listeners stating that this should be addressed and that this movie does show signs of what is to come, but we have to let our voices as christians be heard. This was a direct slap in our faces and completely against all of the standards that we live our lives upon. And they are saying instead of us being free from sin we are instead trapped in this “holier than thou” world. well I cant let this go unheard i will let out the word myself if i have to. We shouldn’t have paid the money we did for PAUL. We went because we read it was a laugh a minuet…NOT a word from the reviews we read, that we, as Christians, would be offended from beginning to end. Well, wait, I have to admit that is not our only feeling. The level of intellect it took to play off the dumbest stereo types of Christianity and Christians perhaps needs our prayers … I wish I, like Paul could touch Nick Frost on the head and give him my ‘pearls’ of wisdom. But, since Nick only thinks bibles are good for warding off mortal bullets and he relentlessly played the joke about his weight over and over… well… I am sure Nick never could make sense out of the scripture that tells Christians ‘not to throw pearls before swine.” WORD UP to COMIC CON! CHRISTIANS DO ATTEND YOUR CONVENTIONS AND WE MIGHT EVEN WATCH THIS KNOWING THAT YOU PLAY A SPECIAL ROLE IN THIS MOVIE….WE WILL THINK TWICE ABOUT YOUR INTOLLERANCE or at best your opinion that Christians are idiots. WE ARE SO glad that we got our money back for attending this diatribe Christian bashing movie. Even the theater manager, an admitting Christian, that heard from us, now thinks he might not ever want to see it for himself. You might not believe in God nor the attributes and intelligence of Christ, or Christians. At least don’t believe that you believe in tolerance and diversity. You STOPPED short of that throughout this movie… especially when near the end, Paul is told “God bless you” and he in return says “Ya whatever.” In closing I just want to add, Christians shouldn’t waist their money on this tribute to atheism and in response to the producers and the writers of this one, I will borrow a line from a movie that truly does pays tribute to diversity, “STUPID IS AS STUPID DOES.”
