The quality seemed like a significant improvement over the DVD. I thought the picture was very good, and the sound was even better.
Whether or not the extended editions would fit without adding discs, I'd say if not, just add more discs! I think people would rather do that and pay more in one shot than to continually have to re-buy. Especially since the special features are on DVDs rather than Blu-rays as it is.

And to Mr. Lopez: I wonder how large the movies are on their respective discs. I know Warner Bros. had talked about "branching" both editions, but I'm sure you're right in saying there wasn't enough room.

Plus, it's a business. They'll release the extended editions when "The Hobbit" comes out. And then once "The Hobbit" hits Blu-ray, Warner Bros. will release an uber box set.

Sigh. Double dipping. Triple dipping. I'm a fool who is easily parted with his money.

What about audio? And is the picture quality of the first movie as bad as ppl are saying? I heard it is not good, like watching the 1080i TNT or TBS broadcasts. But is the audio good? I know it is 6.1 DTS-HD, but could you comment on that?

I do want to say that the reason WB did not put both cuts of the movie on one disc is because they would not fit. Even though a Blu-ray disc is 25 to 50 GB doesn't mean the file size is much less than that. With HD picture and HD audio, I would bet each movie took up 90 percent of their disc space. The Extended Editions are completely different cuts of the films. The music is edited differently, the movie is edited differently. It is not just a matter of some additional scenes that would be pasted in without tampering with the overall product.

Keep up the good blog!
