Christopher Nolan to oversee Superman reboot

According to Deadline Hollywood, Christopher Nolan  has been brought on by Warner Brothers to oversee a reboot of the Superman movie franchise.   He’ll also prep the third Batman film at the same time he “mentors” the Superman reboot, according to Deadline.

Lots of info in the link, including how the Siegel lawsuit may be affecting the timeline.   Historically, Batman directors may not have had the best ideas for Superman — see Tim Burton’s abortive take — but at this time, putting Nolan on board to make sure the project happens doesn’t seem like a bad move.

I liked Bryan Singer’s take, though I know all will not agree.  However, with Singer back in the Fox camp directing “X-Men: First Class,” it likely became easier for WB to sever connections on “Superman.”

Deadline seems to indicate the new Superman will likely be more accurate to the comics — here’s hoping Nolan read Geoff Johns’ recent “Brainiac” arc for some ideas.

Interesting news. My take is that Superman Returns had little chance to sit well with general moviegoers, as it debuted in the midst of worldwide cynicism and widespread disdain for Americans. The filmmakers knew this as they chopped ‘the American way’ off of the iconic line about what Superman stands for. I think if the Superman reboot happened in 2002, it would have been more loved. As a non-cynical American and Superman fan, I liked the film well enough to see that it was a starting point for much more…

That said, I liked what Nolan did for the the Batman franchise and look forward to him shepherding the Superman project!

The Batman films are awesome, this is good news indeed!

Nolan should do well with this, even though he’s not directing. Bryan Singer did okay…but he didn’t make something very appealing for a widespread audience. I think Singer should have stuck with X-Men.
