Downey drops Cowboys and Aliens for Sherlock Holmes 2

Sherlock Holmes

Ran across a Robert Downey Jr. update at BAM’s Blog — Nerdage favorite Robert Downey Jr. has dropped out of the film adaptation of the graphic novel “Cowboys and Aliens” to sign on for a “Sherlock Holmes” sequel.  “Cowboys and Aliens” is being helmed by “Iron Man” director Jon Favreau.

Given that “Cowboys and Aliens” is more or less unproven, and “Sherlock Holmes” did reasonably well out of the gate, this is probably a solid decision for Downey, who will light up cineplexes in May 2010 in “Iron Man 2,” directed by Favreau.

There don’t seem to be hard feelings from Favreau, who tweeted today drumming up support for Robert Downey Jr. at the Academy Awards.

Academy members: Please keep Downey for Holmes and Sam Rockwell for Moon in mind,” he wrote.

I will have to check out “Cowboys and Aliens”. I am sure it would have been a great film with Downey in it, and it is a shame things could have not been put on hold to accomodate his schedule, but a sequel to Sherlock Holmes is good news for me. It was a really fun movie, he is definitely in the top three of my favorite actors.

“Cowboys and Aliens” will be the runaway hit of the summer even though it’s unproven, but come! a western with spaceships you have to luv it.
