Writer hired for Spider-Man 5 and 6
James Vanderbilt, who wrote the screenplay for “Zodiac,” has been signed to write the sequels Spider-Man 5 and 6, Variety reports. Vanderbilt also wrote the first draft of the script for “Spider-Man 4.”
Variety indicates getting the Spider-Man 5 and 6 scripts off the ground is an attempt to shorten the windown between Spider-Man movies. The films could be shot back to back with an interconnected storyline, and could work as a franchise reboot if the current “Spider-Man” cast or director, Sam Raimi, do not return.
Obviously Spider-Man is a huge part of Sony’s strategy in the coming years. It’s a little unusual to think that there are as many Spider-Man films in some kind of production right now as there are films that have been made. Will viewers lose their taste for Spidey? Will Spider-Man films be embraced without Tobey Maguire, if he decides he’s done? What about Sam Raimi?
I tend to think Spider-Man is one of the superheroes (along with Batman) that makes the best transition to film. Batman has had six big-screen outings since 1989, and probably could have had more, if 1997′s “Batman and Robin” hadn’t soured everybody on the whole superhero concept for a few years.
