Perhaps unsurprisingly, I agree with most of what you said, and yeah, why NOT the classic Cobra Commander cowl?

Comments may contain spoilers....

If I wasn't a huge GI Joe fan, I probably would have considered the film a fun Summer action flick. However, I am a fan, and the butchering of Snake Eyes' origin was unforgivable :( They could have spent the same amount of time used on his origin and actually done it right. As it was, it cheapened he and Storm Shadows characters and connection. Check out the original series of GI Joe issues 26 and 27 to see just how much this movie missed the boat. Snake Eyes a homeless kid with ninja fighting skills at the age of ten? what!? No attention is used to show how much Snake Eyes is conflicted in hunting down Storm Shadow. S.S. is only portrayed as a jealous, cold-hearted killer. It is feasible they may be able to be rectify some of what they have done to Storm Shadow with a sequel but I'm not sure I have the faith that they will do so.

The movie totally bypassed differentiating any of the characters with their specific costumes (other than of course Snake Eyes...though the molded mouth looked ridiculous)which is always a mistake and didn't do much to make any of the team all that interesting.

I thought Cobra was handled better though and the changes made to the Baroness/Cobra Commander/Duke history played out fairly well. I can't imagine though why they thought that god awful mask for C.C looked better than the old cowl or helmet he wore in the cartoon/comics. The payoff at the end would have been so much better had he just pulled the classic commander cowl over his head.
