Nerdage in New York: Wednesday Comics, Green Lantern 43
NEW YORK — I’m in New York today, where last night I saw the latest Harry Potter film, “Harry Potter and the Half-Blood Prince.” Look for my review on Wednesday. I had a few
moments to spare yesterday, so I ran down to Midtown Comics, 459 Lexington Ave, to pick up Wednesday Comics and Green Lantern #43, both highly anticipated releases.
Here are my brief reviews of the books:
Wednesday Comics is an experiment in making a modern version of the classic Sunday newspaper comics – if all those comics featured DC superheroes. It unfolds from traditional comic-book size to a double-size book, with each story taking up a full page. I loved this, though I don’t know exactly if it will be to everyone’s taste. I’m not sure many
people in their 20s and 30s are as nostalgic for an era before they were born.
Still, it’s filled with top creators, including Neil Gaiman, Mike Allred, Kurt Busiek and Paul Pope, and it shines the spotlight on several characters who probably couldn’t carry their own series in today’s market, including Kamandi and Metamorpho. Of course, Superman and Batman are also there. I’m looking forward to following this throughout the run.
Green Lantern 43 is the last Green Lantern issue before Blackest Night kicks off next week, and wow, was it dark! This explores what’s happened to Black Hand and how he ties into the Black Lanterns. Writer Geoff Johns brings a heavy sense of foreboding to this issue, and it’s made me excited to read “Blackest Night” all the more. Doug Mahnke’s art is suitably grim for the occasion.
