UPDATE: He fell short of his attempt to break the record, but did finish with 923400 points.
UPDATE 2: He’s trying again!
UPDATE 3: And Donkey Kong wins again, stopping Wiebe at 683,700. Man, this game is tough. It’s a reminder, watching Wiebe play this game at such a high level, how the early games were designed to suck quarters out of kids’ pockets as fast as possible. Games have advanced in a lot of ways, but there’s something about the brutality of something like a “Donkey Kong” that’s almost beautiful. On the face of it, so simple, yet so difficult to actually master.
UPDATE 4: Steve Wiebe steps up again to take another shot at the record.
UPDATE 5: The feed appears to be down. Twitter commenters are indicating the machine blew a fuse.
UPDATE 6: And now he’s going again!
UPDATE 7: He’s at 700,000! Go Steve!
UPDATE 8: Wiebe has broken 830,000.
UPDATE 9: He has broken 900,000!
UPDATE 10: Wiebe is at 950,000. The record is 1,050,200 points.
UPDATE 11: 975,000!
UPDATE 12: Game finished at 989,400. So close! Man, this has been surprisingly compelling viewing for sitting and watching a guy play a game that’s basically extremely repetitive. I really wanted him to get the record.
