Superheroes, myths among 2009′s most anticipated video games
THE NEXT LEVEL
Superheroes will be in full force in 2009 video games, as will sequels and some unusual adaptations. The following are some of my most anticipated video games for 2009. Unless noted otherwise, ratings are pending.
Batman: Arkham Asylum
Paul Dini (“Detective Comics”) is behind the story for this game, set for the PlayStation 3, Xbox 360 and PC.
Eidos has the license to create video games based on the Batman comic books, and this one looks compelling. The Joker and other of Batman’s rogues gallery have taken over Arkham Asylum. Batman must infiltrate the asylum and restore order. In addition to combat, there will also be detective work and puzzles.
Halo Wars
This real-time strategy game set in the “Halo” universe puts the gamer in charge of a military unit. The story takes place 20 years before the events of the first “Halo” game. The game is for the Xbox 360 and is rated T for teen.
God of War III
This third in the series finds Kratos aiming destruction on the ancient gods. His quest – to destroy Olympus and Zeus himself. The game is for PlayStation 3.
DC Universe Online
Characters including Superman, Batman and Green Lantern will fight alongside or against characters created by players. The game is a massively multiplayer online role-playing game set in the DC Comics universe. The story was developed by comic-book writer Geoff Johns, and the much of the design work was handled by comic-book artist Jim Lee. The game is in development by Sony Online Entertainment for the PlayStation 3.
Resident Evil 5
Long in development, “Resident Evil 5″ will allow the gamer to play as Chris Redfield, from the original “Resident Evil” and “Resident Evil: Code Veronica.” He and new character Sheva Alomar investigate a bioterrorism threat in Africa that is transforming people and animals into mindless creatures. The game is for the Xbox 360 and is rated M for mature.
Grand Theft Auto: Chinatown Wars
The popular crime game comes to the Nintendo DS, as gamers are immersed into the Triad crime syndicate. The game will implement the DS’ touch screen as part of the gameplay.
Infamous
This is a “sandbox” style game from the developers of “Sly Cooper.” In “Infamous,” the gamer’s character is granted superpowers, and must choose whether to become a super hero or anti-hero.
The Beatles
Apple Corps Ltd., Harmonix and MTV Games are teaming up for an as-yet untitled game that will include the songs of the Beatles. The game will be “experiential progression through and celebration of the music and artistry of The Beatles,” according to the press release. The game was conceived with input from surviving Beatles Paul McCartney and Ringo Starr, along with Yoko Ono Lennon and Olivia Harrison, each of which endorse the project. Giles Martin, co-producer of The Beatles’ LOVE project, will serve as music producer.
Final Fantasy XIII
The latest installment in the popular fantasy franchise, “XIII” is described as a tale of souls from a futuristic civilization illuminated by the Light of the Crystal. The game will be released for the PlayStation 3 and Xbox 360.
Dante’s Inferno
The developers of the creepy “Dead Space” are adapting the classic poem by Dante into video game form. Game formats and rating to be determined.
