Doctor… Who?
LONDON (AP) – The BBC says little-known actor Matt Smith will take over the title role in the long-running sci-fi series “Doctor Who.”
The 26-year-old is the 11th actor to star in one of Britain’s most popular TV shows – and the youngest.
Smith has appeared on the London stage and starred in the political TV drama “Party Animals,” but is a relative unknown. The new role will make him a major star in Britain, where “Doctor Who” regularly draws 10 million viewers an episode.
“Doctor Who” was first broadcast in 1963 and centers on a time-traveling alien known only as The Doctor who can regenerate into new human bodies.
Current star David Tennant plans to leave the show after four special episodes this year. The BBC said Saturday that Smith will take over in 2010.

I was really hoping for Patterson Joseph from ‘Peep Show’ (among other series), who Rich Johnson swore would get the gig. But I absolutely trust Stephen Moffat so I’m along for the ride no matter what. Any Who is good Who as far as I’m concerned.
Now if we could only get a U.S. network to pick up ‘Peep Show.’ Check it out on YouTube if you’ve never seen it.

No disrespect to Matt Smith, who I am sure will do a great job, because I have liked the whole series since it came back a few years ago. Those in charge have done a spectacular job with the stories and every other minute detail. I was hoping they would “wow” us somehow. Matt Smith, to me, is just a carbon copy of Peter Davison, who took over the role at the age of 29, being the youngest to take over the role after Tom Baker’s storied run.
I guess now, the big news will be who they get to play his companion?
