LONDON (AP) — Britain’s best-known time traveler is ending his journey.
The BBC has announced that Scottish actor David Tennant will leave long-running science fiction series “Doctor Who” in just over a year.
Tennant has played the show’s time- and space-traveling alien hero since 2005. He will appear in a Christmas special and four hour-long episodes to be aired in 2009 and early 2010. But he said Wednesday that when the series returns for a full season in 2010, “it won’t be with me.”
“This show has been so special to me,” Tennant said. “I don’t want to outstay my welcome.”
“Doctor Who” was first broadcast in 1963 and is one of the BBC’s longest-running and most popular programs. Tennant is the 10th actor to play the title character, who has the power to regenerate in a new body.
Classically trained Tennant, 37, is currently starring in Shakespeare’s “Hamlet” for the Royal Shakespeare Company.

I do hope Rich Johnston’s rumor that “Johnson” from ‘Peep Show’ will be the next Doctor is true – I’ll miss Tennant but I said the same thing when I found out that Eccelston was leaving after the first series.
No matter what, with Stephen Moffat taking over, it’s gonna be fantastic.
I like that idea. I had not heard that, but I think it would be terrific. That could set up a 5 Doctor movie in the not too far future(I hope) with Eccleston, Tennant, Davison, and the much maligned 8th Doctor.

The show must go on! Although, it will be very hard for the creators behind the show to come up with someone that I will like as much as David Tennant. I liked Christopher Eccleston quite a bit, but when Tennant came onto the show, he turned it up a notch.
Some of the best episodes were with Tennant. “Girl in the Fireplace” with Sophia Myles and the final story arc in Season 2 with the final episodes with Billie Piper…
It will be sad to see him go, but it will not keep me from watching it. It is a series that I can watch over from beginning to end every time a new season comes out.
