The heroes of the DC Comics universe take on the fighters of Mortal Kombat in a video game set for release in late November.
Comic book scribes Jimmy Palmiotti (”Painkiller Jane”) and Justin Gray (”Jonah Hex”) bring their expertise to the game, which intertwines the Mortal Kombat characters and the DC characters in one storyline. The game will be available for the Xbox 360 and the PlayStation 3.
In addition to head-to-head combat, gamers will be able to choose a favorite character and pursue an adventure in a single-player mode.
“Mortal Kombat” began as an arcade game in 1992, and has since become one of the most popular fighting games of all time. Characters, each with special fighting moves and abilities, include Scorpion, Sub-Zero and Liu Kang.
The game will mark the first video game appearance of DC’s Captain Marvel, not to be confused with the Captain Marvel of Marvel Comics. DC markets its character under the name “Shazam,” the name of the wizard who gives Captain Marvel his powers.
The game’s Captain Marvel is visually based on the version of the character from Alex Ross’ “Kingdom Come” comic books, associate producer Hector Sanchez said on the “MKast” at the game’s official site at www.worldscollide.com.
“It looks almost exactly like we pulled him out of the comic book,” he said.
Captain Marvel was created in 1939 by artist C.C. Beck, and was originally published by Fawcett Comics. For a time in the 1940s, Captain Marvel outsold even Superman, becoming the best-selling comic book of the time.
