The first issue of “Supergirl” by Tulsa-born comic book writer Sterling Gates hit comic book stores this week. In issue No. 34, available now, Supergirl creates a new secret identity.

That’s not the end of the excitement for Supergirl – the next issue, No. 35, ties into the “New Krypton” storyline along with her cousin, Superman. In “New Krypton,” 100,000 Kryptonians make Earth their new home.

“She’s suddenly confronted by the very thing she’s wanted since she got to Earth – she can actually go back to living like a Kryptonian,” Gates said. “At the same time, she feels like she’s got a responsibility to the life she’s been living here on Earth, and so she’s pulled in both directions.”

Gates and artist Jamal Igle plan to clear up Supergirl’s history in issue 35, as well.

“Jamal and I are going to be retelling her origin in a different light, and we’re really going to try to clarify it as best we can,” he said. “It’s just a lot of fun to be working on this character alongside Jamal.”

Gates and DC Comics have more plans together. Announced last weekend at the Baltimore Comic-Con, Gates will write a one-shot featuring popular Justice League of America villain Prometheus. Gates will be part of a company-wide event in January called “Faces of Evil.”

“Prometheus is kind of this ‘anti-Batman’ character – his criminal parents were gunned down by policemen when he was a kid, so he swore to take down all law enforcement agencies, starting with the Justice League,” Gates said.

Though defeated by the League, Prometheus is scheduled to come back with a vengeance in 2009.

“He sees this as his second chance to make a name for himself and put himself back on the map by taking down anyone who might’ve sullied his name while he was away,” Gates said. “Mega violence and mayhem ensues.”

Gates said he’s excited about writing ‘Supergirl,’ which will tie in more closely with the Superman titles.

“Really working on the entire Superman universe with Geoff Johns and James Robinson has been a dream realized,” Gates said. “They are two of my favorite writers, and masters of storytelling, so it’s been fun to sit at the table with them and just work on stories and the direction of the Superman family of books for the next few years.”
