Sterling Gates and I talked about the release of his new comic book and his plans for “Supergirl” as the character moves into the “New Krypton” crossover. We also touched on the recent announcement that he’d be writing a “Prometheus” one-shot for the January “Faces of Evil” event in January. Here’s the full Q&A, a portion of which ran in today’s The Oklahoman.
Matt Price: What’s next for Supergirl in New Krypton?
Sterling Gates: Supergirl is going to have a hard choice in front of her. Enlarging the Bottle City of Kandor, she’s suddenly confronted by the very thing she’s wanted since she got to Earth — she can actually go BACK to living like a Kryptonian. At the same time, she feels like she’s got a responsibility to the life she’s been living here on Earth, and so she’s pulled in both directions.
MP: What’s been most exciting about becoming Supergirl’s regular writer?
SG: Being able to tell fun stories about the Girl of Steel with my partner-in-crime (and art) Jamal Igle. She’s a character that has been a little all over the place, tonally, and I really wanted to get some things set straight.
In Supergirl #35, Jamal and I are going to be retelling her origin in a different light, and we’re really going to try to clarify it as best we can. It’s just a lot of fun to be working on this character alongside Jamal.
Really working on the entire Superman Universe with Geoff Johns and James Robinson has been a dream realized. They are two of my favorite writers, and masters of story-telling, so it’s been fun to sit at the table with them and just work on stories and the direction of the Superman Family of books for the next few years.
MP: What’s happening with the recently announced “Prometheus”?
SG: DC Comics is doing a company-wide event in January called “Faces of Evil,” really trying to pump up the villains of the DC Universe. As a result of that, DC called me and asked if I would write a Faces of Evil one-shot issue focusing on the villain Prometheus.
MP: Tell me about the character, and your take on him.
SG: Prometheus, who’s kind of this “anti-Batman” character — his criminal parents were gunned down by policemen when he was a kid, so he swore to take down all law-enforcement agencies, starting with the Justice League.
And he did. He fought the Justice League to a standstill, came THIS close to defeating them once and for all, but like all villains, he failed in the end and eventually faded into obscurity.
He’s back, though, and he sees this as his second chance to make a name for himself and put himself back on the map by taking down anyone who might’ve sullied his name while he was away. Mega violence and mayhem ensues.
MP: What else are you working on?
SG: Well, I’m pretty wrapped up in Supergirl stuff right now. We’ve got some giant plans for the character, as well as for the Superman Universe in general, and they keep getting bigger and bigger.
I really hope everyone gives Jamal’s and my run on Supergirl a shot. It’s gonna be a lot of fun.

Great read. Nolan Clay’s name drop was a hoot. Clay blogged about it, too. Looking forward to more from Gates.
